UC CAI Technology Development Grant Opportunity
The UC Center for Accelerated Innovation is a collaboration of the 5 UC CTSAs to accelerate the translation of UC discoveries to benefit patients with heart, lung and blood diseases. UC CAI
invites applications from Westwood-based investigators who propose to advance highly innovative early-stage drugs, devices and diagnostics toward commercialization. Review the RFA, eligibility details, and the informational webinar. Applications are due by Dec. 20. UC CAI anticipates making up to three awards of up to $200K each to support technology development.

Funding Available for Augmentation of Major Research Grants in Women's Health 
Pilot funds of $30,000 for one year is available to augment currently funded NIH or major foundation grants for UCLA researchers, to promote exploration of sex and gender-based differences and women's health research. Funds can be used to focus on, expand, or strengthen a research project's applicability to women's health. This Iris Cantor-UCLA Women's Health Center and CTSI award is open to the four CTSI partner institutions. LOIs are due Jan. 28, details here.

LOI Due for Research in Women's Health Fellowship Funding
 
Fellowship funds of $20,000 for one-year is available for one PhD candidate (including M.D. Ph.D. or other dual degree) or post-doctoral student engaged in research related to women's health. This Iris Cantor-UCLA Women's Health Center and CTSI award is open to the four CTSI partner institutions. Submissions are due Jan. 28. Click here for details.

NCATS to Launch Minihepcidin Pre-Clinical Project

NCATS will lead the launch of three pre-clinical projects to bridge gaps in developing therapeutics. One project will focus on the development of minihepcidins, which was licensed by Merganser Biotech and discovered in the lab of Merganser's co-founder, Tomas Ganz, PhD, and Elizabeta Nemeth, PhD. Call for Submissions from Undergrads in CTSI Faculty Labs  

The UCLA Undergraduate Science Journal showcases research and review articles written by UCLA undergraduate students.  For the 2014 issue, USJ wishes to highlight the work of undergraduates that work in CTSI faculty laboratories at the Westwood campus. Article submissions are due Jan. 9.

CTSI Notice of Intent to Announce R Bridge Grants

The CTSI will be announcing this grant in early January 2014 for highly qualified, new investigators at one of our four partner institutions who conduct interdisciplinary and translational research. These awards are specifically intended to help new investigators make the critical transition to independent NIH R01 funding, to remain scientifically productive and strengthen their proposals for resubmission. UC ReX: a UC Shared Data Resource
UC Research eXchange and its UC ReX Data Explorer tool have launched, now providing researchers and specialists access to cohort counts derived from de-identified clinical data collected at the point of care to improve medical care and advance research. The tool enables exploration of a combined population of over 12 million patients from medical center databases at UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Davis, UCSD and UCSF. Training Opportunity: Overview of Health Services Research (HSR) & Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER)
In the first of a ten-part training module, the Jan. 7 session will provide the goals and components of the CER curriculum, define CER and HSR, models used to implement both, and a model for research papers. Drs. Martin Shaprio and Ronald Andersen will present. RSVP required, details here.

Training Opportunity: Access, Barriers, Disparities (Comparative Effectiveness Research Curriculum) 
On Jan. 14, the second of the ten-part CER training course includes learning objectives that address the importance of access as a measure of performance of a health system, models of access and disciplinary origins, dimensions of access and relevance to clinical conditions, assessments of contribution of access and reduction of health care disparities, access for legislation, and models for research paper. CIRM Tools and Technologies III Awards
