Greetings!

Spring fishing is well underway. March Browns still linger about and it is the time of Caddis; Zebras on the Housy and all manner of tan and green on the Farmington. I hope you're able to get out and take advantage of these good hatches.

For the first time we're having a June meeting. We'll gather on Saturday, June 15 on the Housatonic for a barbecue, socializing and some angling. Details are below.

Tonight, June 6, at 6 p.m. Orvis Darien will be hosting a beer tasting plus offering 20% off on everything in the store. It's worth a visit if you can get down there.

Also, note on the sidebar to the left that we'll be doing our macroinvertebrate sampling in September. Contact Ann if you're able to help.

Finally, good news on the legislative front. Funding for the state hatchery that was threatened has been appropriated by the to hear that the state has funded the House and Senate. Thanks to everyone who wrote a letter in support.

See you on the 15th!

Troutfest 2013: Barbecue on the Housatonic
The beginning of a new tradition: June barbecue on the Housatonic River

Housatonic River

Yes, our annual calendar usually ends with the May meeting, but this year on Saturday, June 15th, at noon CVTU will be meeting on the banks of the Housatonic River for a bonus meeting. The purpose of this meeting is to hang out, fish and hang out some more.

The event will be held at Housatonic Meadows State Park commencing at noon. We'll throw some burgers and dogs on the barbecue and do what one does at a picnic sort of event. Of course, the whole river is right there to fish. Let's hope for some good weather.

Bill Bennett is coordinating the event. If you're planning on attending shoot him a quick email.

On Saturday the 15th, you will find us HERE. The event will be held rain or shine.

Fall Macroinvertebrate Sampling
Help our conservation efforts and learn something that'll help you catch more fish.

Mayfly Nymph

Our fall macroinvertebrate sampling will be on Saturday, September 28th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are needed and no experience is necessary. Training will be provided and you'll not only help our conservation efforts but you'll be sure to pick up some tips on the bugs and the fishing on some fine local rivers.

We'll meet at 9 a.m. St John's Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook for a brief refresher training and some coffee/donuts.  All sampling will be done in teams.  We'll set out for sampling soon after training and meet back at St. John's to hand in sample containers.  We should be finished by 1 p.m., possibly earlier.

We'll need as many volunteers as possible to complete the sampling, so please volunteer and bring a friend. No expertise is required and we'll partner you up with someone who has done this before.

The riffle-dwelling benthic macroinvertebrate sampling is part of a state-wide effort on behalf of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to obtain water quality data.  Volunteers should bring waders or waterproof boots, insect repellent, and sunscreen as needed.  Volunteers under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to give consent.  This is a good opportunity for those people interested in the environment to experience data gathering.  Representatives from CVTU will be available to sign volunteer forms.

Should inclement weather prevent sampling on the 28th, the rain date will be Saturday, October 5th..  Please contact Ann Astarita at [email protected] to confirm your attendance.
