Housy Stocked!
Pike Fishing the Housy
Fall Trout Stocking in the Housatonic

During the past three weeks 12,300 trout have been put into the Housatonic River.

In the Upper TMA the state put 9,000 trout in ten miles of river. On Friday the 5th Housatonic River Outfitters put another 800 large Rainbows in the river.

In the Lower TMA the state put 2,500 trout so no matter where you go, you're going to find trout in the river.

Last weekend Sulphurs, Isos and BWOs and the occasional Caddis were hatching though the fish seemed to be on the Sulpurs. Swung flies were effective as well as small dries on the surface.

Greetings!

Fall is now officially underway and so is fall fishing. As noted in the sidebar the significant stocking events of the fall have occurred and the fall hatches have begun. Unlike, the spring, the hatches all appear to be on schedule.

Thanks to all the volunteers who turned out to help with the macroinvertebrate sampling in Newtown. The samples this year appear to be quite good -- lots of the good kind of bugs.

Just as our thoughts turn back to trout we're going to hear about pike fishing on the fly. This is one species I've not had a chance to target and am looking forward to hearing about the tactics, equipment and success the guide Keith Godfrey has had stalking large pike on the Housatonic.

See you at the meeting.

Keith Godfrey, guide at Housatonic River Outfitters, shares knowledge about targeting and fishing for pike on the fly.

Housatonic Pike

This month, Keith Godfrey will share his years of experience stalking large pike on the Housatonic.

Keith will discuss how to catch big northern pike on the fly in rivers. This talk will include a brief overview of Northern Pike and their seasonal movements. He will share what lines to use in rivers and why. Leader construction will be covered, which is extremely important to turn over large flies easily for a days worth of casting. Keith will also touch on weather patterns which can swing the movement of pike and their behavior as well as what tackle and how to pick your flies for these fish and staying confident in catching them.

Keith grew up in Sharon, Connecticut and has fished the Housatonic his entire life becoming very familiar with all of the fish species that are within the river and the niches that they fill. The Housatonic River has been a major influence on his decision to pursue a career in Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Keith received a Bachelor in Technology degree from SUNY Cobleskill in the spring of 2010, shortly after working for NOAA and NMFS as a fisheries observer. When not fishing the Housatonic, he guides for Housatonic River Outfitters instructing individuals on the river and its environment.

The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. but stop by early for pizza, soda and some good conversation with fellow anglers.
