Mayor Dennis Raines

A lot of accomplishments were made in 2012 as noted in our last Gazette and the first quarter of 2013 continues this trend. The following progress has been made or is coming in the near future for our City:

Dairy Queen opened at the former Burger King location and it appears that business has been very good for them to this point. Summer is coming soon and should make their business even stronger.

The Quick Trip on West Butler Road at Ashmore Bridge Road is making great progress on their construction and barring no unforeseen delays is slated to open sometime in July.

Two major intersection improvements in the City (East Butler at Corn/Bridges Road and East/West Butler at 276)  are progressing, somewhat slowly, but sometimes progress does come slowly. We hope that these will be finished in the 2nd quarter or early 3rd quarter of this year.

Our first Adult Police Academy has been very successful and informative to those participants, who should be graduating in the next few weeks. These citizens have become aware of how our Police Officers perform their daily duties and all of them have had very positive comments on their experience. I would encourage any of our citizens to consider signing up for the next session when it is offered again.

Programming for our Cultural Center continues to offer great venues and a full slate of events are on tap for this year. Please continue to check the Cultural Center website at www.mauldinculturalcenter.org for a listing of all the upcoming and ongoing opportunities available at little or no cost to you.

In early March we were informed that our Fire Department Rating would change from a 3 rating to a 2 rating. This will become effective June 1, 2013. You should contact your insurance company at that time and inform them of this change. I want to congratulate our Fire Chief Russell Sapp and our entire Fire Department for their efforts in achieving this goal. Only 35 Fire Departments of the 639 in South Carolina have attained this rating.

During our annual benefit 5k run for SIDS one of our firemen Lt. Gary Brinkley suffered an aneurism early in the race. He is still hospitalized and going through physical therapy at this point. Please continue to keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers as he progresses in this race to recover and return to his duties with the City.

There are many challenges in our City. I appreciate the spirit in which we all, Citizens, Council and City Employees, accept this challenge. Let's continue to Expect Greater Things for our City.

MAULDIN FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES IMPROVED ISO RATING
Opportunity for citizens to see decrease in insurance premiums.

Mauldin and Greenville County Officials with Chief Russell Sapp

On March 4, 2013, Mauldin Fire Chief Russell Sapp announced the new ISO rating of 2 to a room full of firefighters and city staff. Only about 5% of departments in South Carolina achieve the Class 2 rating.  Five years ago a 10 year plan was developed outlining a strategy to accommodate Mauldin Fire Service Area's rapid growth.  The implementation of that plan has included a $2.3 Million investment in the new Station 3,  addition of a $320,000 engine and $312,000 in new staff for the station, which opened last February.  Despite all these achievements, Chief Sapp still sees room for improvement. His plans for the future include a ladder truck, new accountability system for each truck, and additional staff.

Mayor Dennis Raines stated, "this demonstrates a better capability of our fire department to protect lives and property.  The opportunity for reduced property insurance premiums as a result of the improved rating represent a return on the investment our citizens have made in fire suppression service."

Public Safety Committee Chairman Bob Cook describes this as a "tremendous accomplishment for the community" and notes the important partnership with Greenville County in serving the entire fire service area. Chairman Cook noted that both the City and the County contributed funding for this achievement. The City is approximately 10 square miles but Mauldin Fire Department serves 23 square miles.

ISO's expert staff collects information about the quality of public fire protection in more than 44,000 fire districts across the United States. In each of those fire districts, ISO analyzes the relevant data and assigns a Public Protection Classification - a number from 1 to 10. Class 1 generally represents superior property fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area's fire-suppression program does not meet ISO's minimum criteria. In many states, ISO ratings assist insurance companies to determine premiums. The new rating becomes effective June 1, 2013.
