A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

California Women Lead has increased our overall efforts to campaign aggressively for increasing women in elected and appointed positions. We are broadening our efforts to reach all women in California and we are bringing Women's Empowerment Day to new locations throughout the state including Orange County and Oakland. We are also excited to be planning for our first Women's Conference in Orange County, slated for the Fall of 2015.

I want to thank all of our supporters for making our events possible and supporting our mission to engage, empower and elect women.

An additional thank you to our members who renewed their membership and those new members who support our mission to ENGAGE * EMPOWER * ELECT

CONGRATULATIONS TO CA WOMEN LEAD'S 2014 LOS ANGELES "IF NOT YOU, THEN WHO" CLASS

This summer, California Women Lead hosted our second "If Not You, Then Who" Los Angeles class. Participants learned the basics of campaigning over a muti-week series of classes. Fundraising, developing a campaign plan, social media and campaign finance sessions gave participants a great foundation for future campaigns for elected office.

Special thanks to Norton Rose Fulbright for hosting our class in their downtown office and Southern California Gas Company for hosting our graduation reception.

We are currently accepting applications for the 2015 SACRAMENTO class. Visit http://cawomenlead.org/programs/leadership/ and apply today as space is limited!

CALIFORNIA WOMEN LEAD HOSTS TRAINING AT THE 2014 BLOGHER CONFERENCE IN SAN JOSE
In July, California Women Lead was excited to participate in a new venue - social media for women. BlogHer is the world's biggest blogging conference for women. Women from different countries came to San Jose to learn about the power of social media. California Women Lead hosted a suite at the hotel where we conducted an appointments training, a women's healthcare panel, a reception and panel on why it is important for women to be civically engaged. It was a great weekend with a number of women joining California Women Lead and our mission to empower women leaders.

CA WOMEN LEAD AND THE LEAGUE OF CA CITIES WOMEN'S CAUCUS RELEASE REPORT

at the League of Cities Conference in Los Angeles

New Study Points to Number of Women  Serving on City Councils in California

Report shows number of women is less than 40 percent.

Despite statistical gains made nationally for women in elected office, the number of women in California serving in elected office, particularly on City Councils, is not reflective of the population of women in California, according to a report released jointly by California Women Lead and the Women's Caucus of the League of California Cities. The latest statistical snapshot shows a continued need for increased representation by elected women on City Council across the state.

Significant statistics include:
  • Women are 50.3 percent of California population, but only 28 percent of city council seats.
  • 61 cities in California have a women majority council; 71 cities have no women on the councils.
  • 40 percent of cities have only one woman on the council.
  • Of the twelve highest populated cities in the state - Riverside, does not have any women on the council; Los Angeles, Fresno and Bakersfield have only one woman.
Visit http://cawomenlead.org/reportoncitycouncils/ to read the entire report.

CALIFORNIA WOMEN LEAD JOINS SENATOR ANDY VIDAK FOR A FRESNO APPOINTMENTS TRAINING
State Senator Andy Vidak, in partnership with the Fresno Downtown Business Hub, hosted over 80 folks at a training with Governor Brown's Secretary for Appointments Mona Pasquil, California Women Lead State Board President Fiona Ma and California Women Lead Executive Director/CEO Rachel Michelin. Other speakers included Margaret Mims, Sheriff, Fresno County and Dora Westerlund, 21st District Agricultural Association, Big Fresno Fair Board of Directors.

This was a follow up to a recent training, also hosted by Senator Vidak, in Bakersfield where California Women Lead hosted over 100 interested folks in a training on how to get appointed to a board or commission.

CONTRA COSTA/ALAMEDA COUNTY WOMEN CANDIDATES RECEPTION

California Women Lead was thrilled to work in partnership with Assemblymembers Susan Bonilla and Joan Buchanan as well as Contra Costa County Supervisor Candace Andersen, Contra Costa County Supervisor Karen Mitchoff and Contra Costa County Supervisor Mary Piepho in honoring women candidates in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

It was an inspirational event that honored women who are taking the risk by running for office at all levels of government. California Women Lead CEO Rachel Michelin inspired the attendees and thanked them for public service, especially at a time when we need more women running for elected office. Assemblymember Joan Buchanan shared how important it is to have women from all political parties in elected office and how women can work together to accomplish great things. Assemblymember Susan Bonilla shared her story of elected office and how having more women serving has a significant impact on public policy.

It was a lovely event coordinated by the East Bay Regional Advisory Council of California Women Lead and graciously hosted at Supervisor Andersen's Danville office. Supervisor Andersen also shared her story of serving in city government and how that was a stepping stone to her decision to move to the county level.

Thank you to our event sponsors. It is because of partners like these that California Women Lead can host these types of programs throughout the state.

CALIFORNIA WOMEN LEAD HOSTS FIRST WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT DAY - ORANGE COUNTY

California Women Lead was proud to host our first Women's Empowerment Day - Orange County at Experian North American Headquarters in Costa Mesa. The conference kicked off with our Empowered Women's Reception at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. California Women Lead was proud to recognize women running for office in the November election from Orange County. Following the reception, a day focused on being empowered leaders kicked off. Speakers included: Secretary Mona Pasquil, Appointments; Secretary Anna Caballero, Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency; Honorable Charlene Zettel, UC Board of Regents; Honorable Lucy Dunn, California Transportation Commission; Honorable Cyd Brandvein, California Optometry Board; Fiona Ma, President, California Women Lead; Cassandra Pye, APCO Worldwide; Karen Moore, Moore Communications Group; Carrie Nocella, Disneyland Resort; Abigail Lovell, Experian; Kim Sentovich, Walmart; Debra Hotaling, Ford Motor Company; Mary Stutts, Comcast NBC Universal California.

The comments from women who attended the event show what a successful event it was:

"My expectation was to hear reinforcement on female leadership perspectives that have become priority topics in business.... But WOW, OMG, #inspired #excited Hearing journeys of political appointees makes me revisit my purpose in the work I do, day to day. I will attend future events, get educated, get involved- and perhaps even reset my career path. Thank you."

"It was so good to see professional women be proud of their family and admit that work can be crazy, but success is still attainable."

"I loved hearing all of the panels and speeches- Women's Empowerment Day was very fun, interactive and inspiring."

"I actually came with very few expectations. So inspired by what these women have accomplished. Women's Empowerment Day also helped me to realize that although I feel old (48), there's much more I can do and plenty of time to do so."

Thank you to our sponsors who made this event a reality:
