Election Day is quickly approaching and Campaign 2012 will come to an end. I must confess, as a veteran of political campaigns, this cycle has been tougher and uglier than most. The commercials, mail pieces, Facebook posts and tweets took on a very negative tone and don't get me started about the media coverage!
The tone of this campaign cycle had me thinking about a project California Women Lead spearheaded years ago when we were CEWAER... Click here to read more» |

Women's Empowerment Conference
|
"Empowered!" "Ready to get involved!"
"Already planning to come next year!" "Inspired to take action!"
Those are a sample of the comments from attendees of our Women's Empowerment Conference in San Diego. Participants networked with women leaders from throughout the state and honed their leadership skills in sessions like: Empowering Your Voice, Empowering Your Personal Brand and Empowering Your Vote.
Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore (and 2014 candidate for State Board of Equalization) Fiona Ma kicked off the conference with her top ten things she learned from serving in elected office. She pointed out that in politics women need to channel their inner Honey Badger! Board of Equalization Member (and 2014 candidate for State Controller) Betty Yee shared why the work California Women Lead does to ENGAGE * EMPOWER * ELECT is so important - especially as we see a decline in the number of women running for and getting elected to public office in California.
San Diego was the perfect backdrop for a weekend focused on personal, professional and political development and the empowerment of women leaders. A big thank you to the Conference Planning committee and especially Kim Sentovich, Senior Vice-President, Pacific Region, Walmart for chairing the committee. Also thanks to Kaiser Permanente's generous sponsorship, two women from the Ocean Discovery Institute, Carla Pisbe and Carolina Barraza (pictured right), were able to attend the conference. Plans are already underway for next year's conference so visit www.cawomenlead.org for photos from the 2012 conference and updates on 2013.

Good luck to all the women running in the November Election!
The numbers of women in elected office in California is not good. While we can boast some phenomenal women leaders who call California home, there is still much work to be done and it starts by having more women put their name on that ballot.
Win or lose, the women on the ballot are a role model for women across the state who aspire to one day run for office too.
Be on the lookout for the California Women Lead post-election analysis that will be sent via email on posted on our website.
