Warrior's Weekend
Approximately 700 heroes and 300 of their family members descended upon Port O'Connor last weekend to participate in the 7th Annual Warrior's Weekend Fishing Tournament.
The wounded military heroes and their families were treated to accommodations donated by local residents, a day of fishing on over 400 donated boats, plus an awards dinner on Saturday night.
Founded in 2007, Warrior's Weekend is a non-profit, 501 (c) 3 Corporation dedicated to the support of veterans of The United States of America with an emphasis on those wounded in The Global War on Terrorism. This is accomplished through holding the annual fishing event as well as donations to veterans and veterans-based causes.
The Houston Big Game Fishing Club has been a proud sponsor of Warrior's Weekend since 2009.

News from The Billfish Foundation
As tournament season approaches and the fishing heats up for summertime, TBF would like to keep you up-to-date on the current regulations and seasonal closures for Highly Migratory Species (HMS) in the Gulf of Mexico. As of April 4, 2013, the 'Trophy' bluefin tuna (greater than 73") in the Southern Area (which includes the Gulf of Mexico) was closed to harvest of bluefin tuna by recreational vessels. Subsequently, the retention limit for any bluefin tuna is zero in the Gulf of Mexico. The official statement from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) can be found here.
In addition, TBF wants to remind everyone that it is not only required to report the landings of swordfish, billfish, and bluefin tuna to NMFS, but is beneficial for the U.S. recreational sector to account for all HMS species retained by recreational vessels. This information generates better estimates for fisheries managers and is used by TBF to create positions on Amendments for the Fishery Management Plan for Highly Migratory Species. TBF recently submitted comments on May 2, 2013 for Amendment 8 which focuses on swordfish and can be read here.

Captain's Corner
Do you know your job? Before you leave the dock you should know who's doing what. You need to designate your angler, a cameraman to make sure your video equipment is ready and able to take a good video, and designate a specific person to grab
the leader. If it's a killfish, you will need a good gaff man and a second gaff is very important. If you're not sure what your role is when you land a fish, just ask. There is always something you can do even if it's just rotating the chair. Don't put your camera man in charge of the gaff. If something goes wrong it's everyone's fault.
