A word from Michael Thorn-Leeson, 2013 President Elect

Fellow Members,

As the President Elect for 2013-2014, I am writing to you for several reasons.  What a year it has been, under the leadership of Marc Gentry. Starting with the banquet, we raised more money than ever before. The Lone Star Shootout Tournament, again, the best ever. Scholarships funded, two in Jim Peachey's name and an additional ten for a total of twelve funded.

We were able to donate and contribute to WADE (Water Activity Day Events), The Billfish Foundation, Fishing for Tomorrow, Ronald McDonald House (an upcoming event at Pelican Rest Marina), and Warriors Weekend.

As our club grows, 267 members strong at last count, I would like to reach out to you for your participation in a committee of your interest. Our committees are as follows:
Awards, Banquet, Conservation, Education,
Membership, Scholarships, Special Projects,
Sponsorship

Please send your committee of choice to me through [email protected]. I look forward to seeing all of you at Sam's Boat on November 8th for the Club's annual Fall Mixer.

Michael E. Thorn-Leeson

News from The Billfish Foundation
The Billfish Foundation Great News for Billfish Conservation! The Billfish Conservation Act of 2012 was passed in the U.S. Senate on September 23, 2012 during the final hours of the 112th Session of Congress. Recently introduced into the Senate as part of a larger Sportsmen's Legacy Act of 2012, the Billfish Conservation Act was passed separately from the Sportsmen's Act. The Billfish Conservation Act of 2012 (H.R. 2706) will prohibit the sale of billfish in the United States, except for exemptions in Hawaii and the Pacific Insular Area in which traditional fishing practices are still in place. This is a great step forward for billfish conservation as it will eliminate the incentives to export billfish into the United States. The U.S. is currently the largest importer of Pacific billfish and this legislation will have far reaching effects that will increase fishing opportunities for anglers both here in the United States and abroad. Before the Billfish Conservation Act can become effective, President Obama needs to sign the legislation. You have an opportunity to send President Obama a letter and tell him the importance of the Billfish Conservation Act to you. For more information and to send a letter to President Obama, visit www.billfish.org.
