Try The Spirit

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."
1 John 4:1 (KJV)

Jesus warns us that satan appears as an angel of light, and so it should come as no surprise that his angels appear as ministers of light; for this reason we must endeavor to try every spirit, and every situation, to see if it is of God or the enemy.   The stakes in this war are too high to take things at face value! We must not be afraid to make a judgement about the people we encounter or the situations we face. But, in doing so we must try everything righteously, which means judging by using the Word of God as a measuring stick for everything, but always doing so under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Smith Wigglesworth said, "To discern spirits we must dwell with Him who is holy, and He will give the revelation and unveil the mask of satanic power on all lines."

There are times when everything looks right and sounds correct, as if it were surely in-line with the Word of God. But, something inside us is uneasy, our spirit is not settled. Our spirit, which is in direct communion with the Holy Spirit, is able to discern from what is of God and what is not, regardless of how it may look or sound. For this reason we must become a custom to listening to our spirit and staying alert to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is always ready to reveal the truth to us, we must make the choice to look to the Spirit for revelation, and not depend merely on our natural senses. Remember, "We walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7, NKJ). It is not to say that our natural senses cannot be used in trying the spirit of a person, or any given situation, but that the revelation we receive from the Holy Spirit always trumps our natural senses! Try every spirit, taking nothing at face value, using the Word of God as a measuring stick for all truth, and the Holy Spirit as the official interpreter of that truth, and the devil will not be able to easily deceive you!

"Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment." John 7:24 (KJV)
