Be Different
     
"They said to him, 'You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.'" 1 Samuel 8:5 (NIV)
 
God never intended for the Children of Israel to be like the nations around them. God was to be their King and they were to be a nation devoted to Him. God wanted Israel to be distinctively and noticeably different then all the other nations. But, the Israelites looked at how the other nations were and decided they wanted to be the same. They took their eyes off their King, and put them on a people who were not part of God's covenant; they desired to have, and be, something other than that which God had called them to be.
 
God has called us to be different! We are the children of Light, and are to shine as light in this dark world. We are not to blend in! Nor are we to desire the things of this world. But, if we take our eyes off our King, Jesus, and put them on the things of this world, we will desire the things this world has to offer, and we will begin to look and act just like those who are of this world. As God's children we are citizens of Heaven, and we should live as such. We should be noticeably and distinctively different then the children of this world. I encourage you; keep your eyes turned up to Heaven! Seek after eternal things, and not the temporal things of this world! Charles Spurgeon wrote, "We may be certain that whatever God has made prominent in His Word, He intended to be conspicuous in our lives." Allow the Word of God to be conspicuous in your life! Don't be afraid to be different as you brightly shine, bringing light to this dark world!
