Physical Affliction
     
"And this woman, a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?" Luke 13:16 (NASB)
 
This woman, as a daughter of Abraham, would not be an outsider to the family of God, but a future citizen of Heaven. Still, even as a daughter of Abraham, we find the devil had physically afflicted her. But, now with Jesus on the scene, her deliverance had arrived! After 18 years of being physically afflicted by satan, she would be set free by the Son of God! As we talk about the enemy, and his power to cause physical afflictions on the children of God, and the world at large, we must be careful to examine the Bible in a holistic manner to gain a true picture of His power to afflict, and our power to resist. When God originally created Adam and Eve, He gave them authority to reign upon the earth. But, when Adam sinned he essentially surrendered his God given authority over to the devil, who wasted no time in using that authority to cause death and destruction throughout the world.
 
But when Jesus showed up on the scene He brought the cure for all the sickness and death the enemy had afflicted the world with! "When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases'" (Matthew 8:16-17, NIV). The Scriptures are clear; Jesus took the infirmities and sickness of the world in His own body! He took our weakness and gave us His strength! His body was broken for us! Our healing has been fully provided through, and by, Jesus Christ!
