The War

"For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places." Ephesians 6:12 (NLT)

C.S. Lewis, in his work entitled The Screwtape Letters, documents a fictional correspondence between two demons. The two demons are represented as uncle and nephew and are involved in a mentor - mentee relationship in which Screwtape tries to direct his nephew Wormwood in causing destruction in the life of the man he has been assigned to. In the second letter it is revealed that the man Wormwood has been assigned to has been saved, but Screwtape relieves Wormwood in his present failure with these words:
"One of our great allies at present is the Church itself. Do not misunderstand me. I do not mean the Church as we see her spread out through all time and space and rooted in eternity, terrible as an army with banners. That, I confess, is a spectacle which makes our boldest tempters uneasy. But fortunately it is quite invisible to these humans. All your patient sees is the half-finished, sham Gothic erection on the new building estate."
Screwtape comforts Wormwood in his belief that even though the man is saved, and is now going to church, that he will never realize what the true Church is, or the power it carries in the battle against darkness it is to be engaged in. Although this is a fictional tale, like many of C.S. Lewis' fictional writings, it reveals tremendous Scriptural truths!

The Church of Jesus Christ is much greater than any single building or denomination, and the war the Church (made up of ALL believes in Christ) is to be involved in against the satanic forces of darkness has for the most part gone ignored by the Church! The enemy has been relatively successful in deciding much of the Church of Jesus Christ! Corrie Ten Boom said, "The first step on the way to victory is to recognize the enemy." The enemy realizes if he can misdirect our efforts and energies into fighting against flesh and blood, ignoring the spiritual realities in the heavenlies that are actually directing the human efforts, he can win the battle; for he knows the war has already been won!

"In this way, he disarmed[a] the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross." Colossians 2:15 (NLT)
