Pride
     
"First pride, then the crash-the bigger the ego, the harder the fall." Proverbs 16:18 (MSG)
 
Pride is an exalted sense or awareness of one's own accomplishments or failures, both good and bad, which takes pleasure, expressed outwardly or held inwardly, on focusing and lifting up those accomplishment and failures.   Pride is focused on "self", it is occupied with "I" instead of the great "I AM". Pride is consumed with one's own achievements, as well as one's own sins. It is the work of pride to turn our attention from Jesus, and all He has accomplished and suffered, to all we have achieved or had to endure. Pride is deadly, and because of its self-preoccupation, restricts believers from looking to Jesus and depending on His finished work on the cross to receive a full measure of God's Grace. Thomas Adams said, "Self-righteousness is the devil's masterpiece to make us think well of ourselves."
 
Pride is a stumbling stone the enemy loves to use, causing believers to crash, falling short of the grace God so eagerly desires to give them! The devil skillfully wielded pride to attack Adam and Eve, causing them to fall from God's grace; missing out on all the goodness and blessings God desired to lavish upon them! Pride is like a dividing wall that blocks the blessings of God from reaching the hands of His children, and humility is the hammer that breaks the wall to pieces!
 
"But He gives us more and more grace [through the power of the Holy Spirit to defy sin and live an obedient life that reflects both our faith and our gratitude for our salvation]. Therefore, it says, 'God is opposed to the proud and haughty, but [continually] gives [the gift of] grace to the humble [who turn away from self-righteousness].' So submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him] and he will flee from you" James 4:6-7 (AMP).
