Building Bridges
     
"When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings." 
1 Corinthians 9:22-23 (NLT)
 
The urgency and importance of winning people to Christ drove the Apostle Paul to make an effort to find common ground with the people he came in contact with. The apostle chose to build bridges between himself and others for the sake of the Gospel. When we build bridges we make an effort to find something in common with those we are hoping to win to Christ. This doesn't mean we compromise Kingdom values or the Word of God. But rather, we hold tight to those values, and the unchanging certainty of God's Word, as we love the world enough to find some way to bring the lost into the Kingdom of God. Billy Graham once said, "Be attractive and winsome, but do not compromise your convictions for the sake of popularity."

As we go forth to win the lost back to Christ we must never equate building bridges with compromise! The church was never meant to live in isolation, and for too long has built walls to keep certain people out, instead of building bridges to bring these people who may seem "unsavory" in the eyes of many churches, to Christ, and into the Church. Indeed, we are to be insulated by the Holy Spirit from the ways of the world, but we can never accomplish our Mission if we chose to isolate ourselves from it! We must allow the love of God to look past the unpleasant behavior of the lost, seeing them for who they could be in Christ and not just who they currently are, so that we may find some way to connect with them, winning their trust, and eventually winning them for Christ!
