Wise Counsel

"But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men and instead asked the opinion of the young men who had grown up with him and were now his advisers." 1 Kings 12:8 (NLT)

Rehoboam was the son of Solomon, and he inherited the Kingdom of Israel after his father's death. Solomon had apparently, at some point, become harsh with the people of Israel, and now they looked to his son Rehoboam, the new king, for a better life. Rehoboam received sound counsel from men who once advised his father, but he forsook this counsel for the foolish advice of the young men he had grown up with. The young king would pay a price for rejecting the wise counsel he had received.

Francis Bacon, a philosopher of the 16th and 17th century, considered by Thomas Jefferson to be one of the wisest men to ever lived, said, "He that gives good advice, builds with one hand; he that gives good counsel and example, builds with both; but he that gives good admonition and bad example, builds with one hand and pulls down with the other." If you're going to look to someone for advice make sure they're living a life that testifies to their ability to lead and direct others with wisdom. Just because someone is a friend doesn't mean they are capable of giving good godly advice. If you need counsel look to the Lord, and seek out the servants of God who lead and direct according to His Word.

"Become wise by walking with the wise; hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces." Proverbs 13:20 (MSG)
