Forgiveness
 
"Now, however, it is time to forgive and comfort him. Otherwise he may be overcome by discouragement." 2 Corinthians 2:7 (NLT)
 
Paul urges the church in Corinth to forgive the one who had sinned so greatly in the church. The man had obviously repented, changing his ways, and now it was time to welcome him back in the church. Paul also tells them they need to do this so "satan doesn't outsmart them". If they did not forgive, satan was sure to come in and use their unforgivenss as a tool of affliction against them. Because of this, and the man's repentance, Paul urges them to forgive quickly.
 
Watchman Nee said, "Frequently the enemy entices Christians to harbor an unforgiving spirit - a very common symptom indeed among God's children. Such bitterness and fault-finding and enmity inflict a severe blow upon spiritual life." Harboring unforgiveness hurts no one but the one who harbors it, and it opens a door for the devil to enter through. Forgiveness can be difficult and seldom feels good emotionally, but it is not an act of the emotions, but one of the will. Refuse to harbor unforgiveness. Give forgiveness where it is not deserved. If you refuse to forgive the enemy will hold you captive. But, if you will make a conscious decision to forgive those who have done you wrong, you will live a life of freedom, one in which the enemy has no power or grounds to torment you with the evils of yesterday.
