Wait For The Promise
 
"On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about." Acts 1:4 (NIV)
 
As Jesus gets ready to leave the disciples and ascend to Heaven, He admonishes them to wait for the promise of the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Holy Spirit was promised to men, and it would indeed be given just as the Lord promised. But, it would be given in the Lord's timing. If they became impatient or lost faith in the Lord's promise and left Jerusalem, they would have missed the gift they were promised. The disciples would have to patiently wait, and ten days later their patients and faith would be rewarded when they received the Gift they were promised.
 
Waiting is never easy, but for the child of God it is necessary. Charles Spurgeon was once quoted as saying, "If the Lord Jehovah makes us wait, let us do so with our whole hearts; for blessed are all they that wait for Him. He is worth waiting for. The waiting itself is beneficial to us: it tries faith, exercises patience, trains submission, and endears the blessing when it comes." If God has spoken a promise to your heart; hold tight to it! Endure with faithful patience as the Lord prepares that which He has promised you! And, receive the promise with grateful expectations!
