Poor in Spirit

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
Matthew 5:3 (NKJ)

Blessed and poor are two words which just don't seem to go together. In our society we never see being poor in a blessed manner. Yet, Jesus puts the words together to describe a unique attitude to receive the blessings of God. To be poor in spirit is a state of being humble. Being poor in spirit is the direct opposite of being rich in pride. We are encouraged here by Jesus to avoid the prideful attitude that often accompanies accomplishments and acclaim. The Bible tells us that God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. A humble man or women is able to receive from the Lord, and those around them, because they don't believe they have come as far as they can. They realized they can learn and receive from others, and they keep an attitude of humility and respect towards others and God. This is a person ready to receive the blessings of God! Keep an attitude of humility with God at all times, and with all people, and you will position yourself to receive the fullness of the Kingdom of Heaven!

"Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." 1 Peter 5:5 (NKJ)
