We often think of God speaking in a loud booming voice. But, in this verse, when God speaks to Elijah it's in a still small voice. Alexander MacLaren, an English non-conformist minister of the 19^th century, said, "Do not let the loud utterances of your own wills anticipate, nor drown, the still, small voice in which God speaks. Bridle impatience till He does. If you cannot hear His whisper, wait till you do. Take care of running before you are sent. Keep your wills in equipoise till God's hand gives the impulse and direction." In life there are many distractions that attempt to keep us from hearing the Lord's voice. Raging winds of confusing thoughts roar through our minds. Booming earthquakes of varying voices calling out to us, trying to give us directions of what we should do, but God's voice will not be found in any of these. God will speak in a still small voice to the deepest regions of our hearts by His Holy Spirit. Allow only God's voice to have a place in your heart. Wait for Him to speak to you. Give your ear, heart, and attention to the Lord, and you can be certain He will speak to you; you will hear His voice!
