A Hill Of Beans
"Next in rank was Shammah son of Agee from Harar. One time the Philistines gathered at Lehi and attacked the Israelites in a field full of lentils. The Israelite army fled, but Shammah held his ground in the middle of the field and beat back the Philistines. So the Lord brought about a great victory." 2 Samuel 23:11-12 (NLT)
Shammah was the third in line of David's mighty men. The Bible says that he took a stand in the middle of a field full of lentils, and refused to me moved, even when others ran. Shammah literally took a stand and fought over a "hill of beans"!
The term "hill of beans" is usually used to symbolize something trivial, or of little importance; it would surely not be something worth fighting over. But, as God's children often times what the world may see as trivial can directly contradict the Word of our God. And, when something contradicts the Word of our God that is something worth taking a stand on, something worth fighting for, even if the world sees is as nothing more than a "hill of beans". Elisabeth Elliot wrote, "The Word of God I think of as a straight edge, which shows up our own crookedness. We can't really tell how crooked our thinking is until we line it up with the straight edge of Scripture." As God's children we measure all truth according to God's Word, and we stand against everything that would attempt to exalt itself above that Word! Times may indeed change, but the absolute truth of God's Word will not! Refuse to compromise God's Word in your life, even if others around you do! Stand firm by the power of the Holy Spirit living inside you, on the ABSOLUTE TRUTH of God's WORD!
"We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ." 2 Corinthians 10:5 (MSG)
