"So they asked the Lord, 'Where is he?' And the Lord replied, 'He is hiding among the baggage.'" 1 Samuel 10:22 (NLT)

God had called Saul to be king of Israel, Samuel had anointed him as king, and despite his obvious dominating physical stature he was still afraid of the position God had called him to. When Samuel comes to pronounce him as king in front of everyone, Saul is found hiding among the baggage. God had called Saul to do something he had never imagined himself doing, and even though God is behind this new position, Saul is terrified!

God often calls us to do things that are far beyond ourselves, things that can honestly leave us terrified in the natural. We know God is with us, we know He's called us, but none the less we're scarred. At times like this it's easy to hide in the baggage of our past, to get caught up in the things of old. These things can be sinful in their very nature, or they can be things that aren't necessarily sinful, but things that keep us away from the Lord, stealing our time, energy, and affection that belong to our Him. In the Book of Jeremiah the prophet writes, "I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." God does indeed have a plan for our lives, but it is most often very different then the plan we have, which can be terrifying! Trust God! Go where He leads! If you find that you are hiding in the baggage of the past, turn from it and run to your Heavenly Father, trusting and embracing His plan for your life! God is faithful!!
