Riches 

 "People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beast that perish" 

Psalm 49:20 (NIV)

 

The riches of this world can be used in many ways. One way we can use them is to please ourselves. We can buy all the things "our" heart desires; cars, homes, vacations, various luxury items. We can surely justify our spending in the fact that we work hard for our money and should be able to use it in any way we want. But, as we reflect on God's Word we are quickly reminded that "you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth." Not only should we remember who gives us the power to gain wealth, but also that when we leave this earth we shall take none of that wealth with us!

 

A second way we can use our wealth is to further God's Kingdom. We can use the wealth that God blesses us with in the pursuit of fulfilling the Great Commission. We can wisely invest our earthly riches in eternal things, the things that are dear to our Lord's heart. There is nothing that God desires more than the lost souls of this world! Let us be wise with the wealth God has blessed us with, whether it is great or little, let us invest it in things that will bring an eternal return! Hudson Taylor, the great missionary to China, once said, "The use of means ought not to lessen our faith in God, and our faith in God ought not to hinder our using whatever means He has given us for the accomplishment of His own purposes."

 

"Don't hoard treasure down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust or-worse!-stolen by burglars. Stockpile treasure in heaven, where it's safe from moth and rust and burglars. It's obvious, isn't it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being." Matthew 6:19-21(MSG)
