"Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure; in vain have I washed my hands in innocence." Psalm 73:13

The psalmist looks around at the prosperity the wicked are enjoying, and perhaps feels a sense of foolishness.  He feels that his efforts to live a godly life have somehow been in vain.  He suffers for living righteous while the unrighteous enjoy all the pleasures this life has to offer.  This is probably something that many of God's children who are living according to His Word have at one time or the other felt.  Sometimes it feels that we are struggling through this life, while those who give no consideration to the Word of God live it up!  And, in truth this life can be a struggle for the child of God, because we live in a world system that contradicts all we know to be true.  The psalmist comes to the conclusion that though he may face times of difficulty, that he does not understand, as the wicked seem to live lavishly on this worlds delicacies, the truth is he desires none of these things anyways!  He concludes this earth holds nothing he desires!  His desire is for the Lord alone!  I think this is great wisdom!  As God's children our desire should be on the One above, the One who died for us, and the One who is coming back for us!  Fix your eyes on heaven!  Seek after the things of heaven; the eternal things!  Be careful not to compare yourself to the people who are living according to this world's system, we are not of this world!  Seek after the Lord with all that you are, and He will fill every desire in your life with His overwhelming presence!  Living a life of righteousness and holiness is not in vain!
