Judging Foolishly...

"Then David said, 'I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.' So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David's servants came to Hanun in the land of the people of Ammon to comfort him. And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun, 'Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Did his servants not come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?'" 1 Chronicles 19:2-3

When the king of the Ammonites died, David sent men with his condolences.  The king had been a friend of David's and he wanted to show kindness to his son.  But the son, Hanun, was foolish.  He gave ear to the wrong council, and judged the men as spies.  He treated David's men shamefully, sending them away humiliated and disgraced.  Hanun would pay for his poor judgment when David dispatched Joab, commander of the military, with the best soldiers in all of Israel to fight against the Ammonites and their allies.

The Bible teaches us to judge, despite what many who don't know the Bible may say.  The Bible tells us to judge righteously.  And, the only way to judge righteously, is to judge according to God's eternal Word, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.  It is the Holy Spirit that guides us into all truth.  Don't be afraid to make judgments, but allow the Holy Spirit to guide you according to God's Word.  If we fail to make judgments, or judge according to worldly standards, we like Hanun will pay the price.  Give ear to the Holy Spirit!

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world." 1 John 4:1
