"Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the LORD. So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them."  

Joshua 9:14-15

When the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua and Israel had done to Jericho and Ai they came up with a plan to deceive them. They knew God was with them and they couldn't beat them in a fight. So, they came up with a plan to trick them into making a treaty with them. They went to Joshua and the Israelites pretending to be from a far off country. Joshua and the Israelites struck of a treaty with them and never consulted God. If they would have only asked God before they made the decision, they would have saved themselves a lot of grief.

We should always check with God before making any decision. God is with us and desires to guide us, but we must acknowledge Him. The Bible tells us "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." If we will only take the time to ask God before making a decision He will direct us in the path we should take; a path that will save us a lot of grief and anxiety later on. Allow God to direct your path every day. Refuse to act on your own wisdom, and seek that of God!

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6
