"Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?"  

1 Kings 3:9

Solomon as a new king knew to be a good ruler and leader he would need great wisdom. Above riches and military might the thing that would be the most valuable to him as the king of Israel would be wisdom. So when the Lord asks Solomon what he wanted Solomon request wisdom, and the Lord gave it to him. The Lord tells Solomon he will be the wisest man to ever live. Throughout Solomon's reign people would come from far and wide just to hear him. The fame of his wisdom would spread throughout the world.

True wisdom is more valuable than anything we could acquire. True wisdom teaches us the fear of the Lord, which is to respect and trust God's words and judgments. True wisdom teaches us not to lean on our own understanding, but to acknowledge the Lord in all we do and allow Him to direct our path. True wisdom will lead us in living a prosperous and fruitful life in the eyes of the Lord here in this world for His Kingdom, which we are a part of.

"Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding." Proverbs 4:7
