Greetings!

On behalf of The Board of Commissioners, staff and volunteers, we publish our biweekly newsletter about the plans, opportunities, events and activities of The BioDistrict. Through this newsletter we hope to help the community understand the vast potential of our organized and sustained efforts to build the district, and the plans it holds for our local economy.

New Orleans ended up being a big winner from the HIMSS13 Convention. All told, there were 44,127 attendees, vendors and media in town for the event, representing a $169,850,000 economic impact on the City. The HIMSS Career Services training has directly resulted in 8 people getting job offers with many more to follow as more people receive their CAHIMS certification. The HIMSS Career Services Institute represents an $85,000 value to the BioDsitrict and in turn to New Orleanians.

Finally, we hosted a reception to highlight the BioDistrict\LPHI Collaboration and all that New Orleans has accomplished in positioning ourselves as a Hub of Health Innovation, Education and Economic Development

The BioDistrict provides planning, financing and strategic programming critical to the preparation and later expansion of the range of opportunities for all New Orleanians; which we can see from the massive public-private investments being made.

Be an eyewitness to $2 Billion of construction. Nearly 7,700 construction workers will be on site for two more years!

MORE CRANES IN THE SKY THAN ANY TIME IN OUR HISTORY

We ask for your continued support as we work to attract thousands of new high paying sustainable jobs, better healthcare outcomes, new capital investments and new educational opportunities -- all within a sustainably built environment. Building the ecosystem necessary to support this industry is difficult but critical work and will be the reason we succeed as a community.

Please share this newsletter with a friend, colleague or loved one looking for positive news about the future of New Orleans as the center of Southeast Louisiana's Super-Region and the emergence of a fourth pillar to our economy.

Sincerely,
BioDistrict New Orleans

New Orleans served as the host for HIMSS13 giving us the opportunity to celebrate the progress made by the Louisiana Public Health Institute and the Crescent City Beacon Council. The Crescent City Beacon Council of New Orleans is one of 17 communities chosen to participate in the Beacon Community Grant Program run by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.  The ONC, the State, and City Government leaders are all working in collaboration for better health outcomes, increased medical research, and accelerated economic development.

As we move to the next level of electronic record adoption, the nation's healthcare organizations, providers, payers and consumers will take on new forms of health information exchange. New Orleans is already being viewed as a community which is benefiting by using a mixture of new facilities, academic & industry collaboration, job training and technology to create a new model that is based on wellness and prevention over hospital stays.

Jim Mc -- HIMSS
BioDistrict President & CEO James p. McNamara said, "New Orleans is at the forefront of a new age of healthcare that will combine patients, clinicians, institutions and research in a seamless connection. Chronic disease management will be integrated with data analytics improving the time, cost and inefficiencies of the current healthcare system."

Anjum
Dr. Anjum Khurshid, Director of the Crescent City Beacon Council called New Orleans "a national model of health, innovation and technology to improve population health outcomes, increase research and create new jobs and economic development for communities".

DHH Greenstein
"The progress made in New Orleans has been phenomenal and we hope to extend it [HIE's] throughout New Orleans and the rest of the State," said Louisiana Health Secretary Bruce D. Greenstein.

Karen Desalvo
New Orleans Health Commissioner Dr. Karen DeSalvo said, "one of the things I'm particularly excited about for Beacon going forward is not only the opportunity for our health information platform to be a job creator, to stimulate the economy and innovation in the healthcare space, but also to improve the public's health more broadly."
