Greetings!
On behalf Board of Commissioners staff and volunteers, we publish our biweekly newsletter about the plans, opportunities, events and activities of the BioDistrict to help the community understand the vast potential an organized and sustained effort to build the district holds for our local economy.
Programming is a critical part of our plans to expand the range of opportunities for all New Orleanians. Programs like meeting with Parents and Teachers, Business and Professional Associations, as well as coordinating sustainable design standards, webcasts, webinars, annual luncheons, seminars and conferences and tax exempt bond financing are all parts of the BioDistrict holistic approach to economic growth.
 | President and CEO James McNamara at the Theodent Kids launch speaking about the holistic approach to economic development. |
We ask for your continued support as we work to attract thousands of new high paying sustainable jobs, better healthcare outcomes, new capital investments and new educational opportunities -- all within a sustainably built environment. Building the ecosystem necessary to support this industry is difficult but critical work and will be the reason we succeed as a community.
Please share this newsletter with a friend, colleague or loved one looking for positive news about the future of New Orleans as the center of Southeast Louisiana's Super-Region and the emergence of a fourth pillar to our economy.
Sincerely, BioDistrict New Orleans James P. McNamara President & CEO |
BioDistrict - The Bloor Group Webcast Series
The series is designed to bring international exposure to the strengths of BioDistrict based research at our member institutions. First up is the Crescent City Beacon Community.
A focus of the BioDistrict is becoming a global hub for translational (bench to bedside) medicine. The webcast will discuss how a local group is addressing the top priority of improving patient care. Hear how a group of New Orleans providers are leading the effort to set the national standard.
Led by the Louisiana Public Health Institute, several community healthcare providers embarked on a redesign of comprehensive care delivery, called the Crescent City Beacon Community, to improve the overall health of the greater New Orleans community. Though still in its early stages, the project has already received national recognition for excellence, and is being considered as a model for other major urban centers throughout the country.
Special Guest: Dr. Anjum Khurshid, Director of Health Systems, Louisiana Public Health Institute
The Webcast is: Monday, February 25, 2013 12:00 pm Central Standard Time |

BioDistrict acknowledges Chevron for the STEM ZONE Pavilion
As huge crowds descended on New Orleans for the Super Bowl, Chevron reached out to teach students on the value of a STEM education.
You never know who your are going to see these days. No one signal act, event or lesson is going to create the ecosystem we need to support the development of the bioscience industry. Events like the Super Bowl are a great way to reach an otherwise unreachable audience. Thanks Chevron Corporation for hosting The STEM ZONE in Woldenberg Park as part of the Super Bowl Boulevard. The tent was buzzing as students learned about momentum, gravity, evolution and more... both fun and informative!
Thanks to the CHEVRON Corp for getting positive educational activities out to New Orleans students! |
305 students, business professionals, community activists, teachers, doctors, lawyers and researchers attended the screening of DeBakey: A Documentary. It was by all accounts the largest networking event in the history of the New Orleans Biosciences industry. More than the numbers, was the range of ages and disciplines that attended.
In addition to the inspiring story about Dr. Michael E. Debakey, those who attended learned more about the Louisiana Public Helath Institute and the Crescent City Beacon Council and how the innovation in the Health Information Record Exchange will lead to better healthcare outcomes, more jobs and assist the BioDistrict in developing the sustainably built environment.
Here are some unsolicited comments:
Ann said, "It was exciting to see the mixture of demographics represented in the audience. You deserve congratulations for the outreach that brought this diverse group into the same space."
Ben said, "Thank you for screening the DeBakey film. Amazing!"
Cathy said, "I wanted to tell you how much my husband and I enjoyed the DeBakey presentation this evening. It was a wonderful film and a great event. I really appreciated all the energy in the room and the convening of people from so many different areas. Congratulations, and I look forward to attending more."
There were plenty more demonstrating the effectiveness of our multifaceted programming.

Biodistrict President and CEO calls it a major milestone in the continuing collaboration between the City's two largest industries, i.e., healthcare\bioscience and the hospitality industry.
