You're invited to our first 2013 networking event and the screening of a documentary about Dr. Michael E. Debakey. This event is free and open to the public, in particular the New Orleans bioscience and medical professionals interested in building a community for better health outcomes and economic opportunities.
We be joined by Dr. Tony Herring, Caldwell Visiting Professor and Filmmaker and the Director Mr. Ken Mandel, who worked on this documentary about the late Dr. Michael DeBakey, which pays homage to the life of the world-renowned cardiac surgeon, who held both bachelor's (1930) and medical (1932) degrees from Tulane.
DeBakey is an inspiring documentary about the life of famed heart surgeon Michael E. DeBakey. Dr. Tony Herring, a student of DeBakey's in the 1960's sets out to learn what made his mentor and teacher tick. DeBakey's career has spanned over seventy years, has in his work touched the lives of millions of people of all nations. In World War II he developed surgical principles which were the beginning of the M.A.S.H. unit. He helped lay the foundations for both the Veterans Administration Hospital system and the National Library of Medicine. After leaving New Orleans, his presence in Houston, Texas help build the Texas Medical Center, which is the largest medical center in the world. His innovations in the field of cardiovascular surgery are legendary and include development of the roller pump for cardiac bypass, the treatment of complex aortic aneurysms, carotid and coronary bypass surgery, and recently the left ventricular assist device. He is truly a national treasure. In 2007, Dr. DeBakey was awarded the Gold Congressional Medal of Honor.
Dr. Tony Herring, Chief of Staff Emeritus at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, produced the film shortly before DeBakey died in 2008 at the age of 99, will speak about the filming of the documentary that carries audiences through the renowned surgeon's history, touching on his personal life, his numerous professional accomplishments and his legacy within the context of medical science and innovation.
Mr. Ken Mandel is an award-winning documentary filmmaker. His interests include music, health related issues and the impact of hurricanes. A Fight to the Finish: Stories of Polio was recognized by the Academy of Arts and Science as "one of the best Documentaries of 2000."
