 | Veterans Affairs: Serving Those Who Served The Veteran Hospital now under construction on Canal Street is a critical healthcare facility for veterans from Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. Southeastern US is the faster growing under 25 year old veteran population returning from foreign wars in the country. The new $1.2-billion VA hospital and the $1 Billion University Medical Center are in the construction phase. Nearly 11,600 piles were driven to support the nearly 2 million square feet of construction.
Together, the two hospitals represent the largest hospital project in the world and are projected to generate $1.26 billion in annual economic impact. Overall healthcare industry and private-sector investment in a 1,500-acre (607-hectare) area known as BioDistrict New Orleans are expected to generate $9.6 billion in personal earnings over the next 20 years and create more than 34,000 new jobs in the New Orleans metropolitan area.

HIMSS Career Services and BioDistrict adding more opportunities
First of its kind collaboration designed to assist New Orleanians with vendor agnostic training and certification for highly sought sustainable jobs in the Health IT Industry

HIMSS and BioDistrict, in association with the New Orleans Chamber, the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Morial Convention Center, are establishing a national model for other conventions to follow.

HIMSS and BioDistrict New Orleans are working together on health IT initiatives which are anticipated to grow even faster in the next several years. This collaboration will focus on education, career support and online initiatives before and during the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition, which will be held in New Orleans on March 3 - 7, 2013.
The synergies between the two organizations will be expanded to include other New Orleans-based agencies with the focus on Health IT to improve healthcare outcomes, career development and capital resources offered through HIMSS and its membership.
Career Services Institute
New Orleanians and area residents are invited to attend the HIMSS Career Services Institute, a full-day program on Tuesday, March 4, 2013. During the institute attendees can receive career guidance, on premise certification testing and possible job opportunities. This opportunity is open to both entry and advanced-level professionals in the health IT field or those wanting to enter the field. This Career Institute is being offered compliments of HIMSS. A New Orleans based start-up venture headed by Mr. Todd McDonald, GoToInterview.com provides a web-based tool designed to connect employers and employees in high-turnover industries. This unique technology creates a channel for employers to review short video interviews of potential candidates answering customized questions initiated by the employer.

Louisiana's digital media and software development tax credit is the country's most aggressive business incentive
Health IT development and implementation is an eligible activity for 35% tax credit
.
The goal of the BioDistrict is to attract more companies and new investment in the healthcare industry to accelerate job creation, research and healthcare delivery through real-time human health data exploration, using software development based on advanced mathematics and computing technology.
Benefits
Louisiana's 35 percent digital interactive media and software development tax credit,the strongest of its kind in the nation, is helping traditional and digital companies of all sizes gain a competitive edge.
- Provides a 35 percent tax credit on payroll for in-state labor
- Offers a 25 percent tax credit for qualified production expenses made in Louisiana
- No cap and no minimum requirement
- Effective Jan. 1, 2012, the tax credit is available at the end of each year for a refund of 100 percent of its value claimed on Louisiana state tax return or certified applicants can receive 85 percent of the value earned as a rebate any time during the year
Eligibility
The incentive is open to all Louisiana digital interactive media and software development projects that are not regulated under Louisiana Gaming Control Laws. The tax credit does not apply to software developed for institutional, private or internal purposes and excludes largely static Internet sites. Only work physically performed in Louisiana and direct development equipment purchased through Louisiana businesses qualify for the incentive.
