Greetings!
On behalf of the BioDistrict New Orleans Board of Commissioners and staff, we publish our biweekly newsletter about the plans, opportunities and activities of the BioDistrict to help the community understand the vast potential we represent.
Last week, we hosted our Third Annual Luncheon celebrating the post-Katrina advances made in developing another economic pillar that New Orleans can depend on for sustained growth. Cranes and more cranes tell the real story as the momentum builds towards greater prosperity for all New Orleanians!
We ask for your continued support as we help attract thousands of new, high paying jobs, better healthcare and new educational opportunities in a sustainable environment. Building the ecosystem necessary to support this industry is difficult but critical work and will be the reason we will succeed.
Please share this newsletter with a friend, colleague or loved one looking for positive news about the future of New Orleans as the center of Southeast Louisiana's Super-Region and the emergence of a fourth pillar to our economy.
Sincerely, James P. McNamara President & CEO |

Harnessing Big Data to Improve Healthcare
BioDistrict looks to leverage location, workforce, local data set and university science to super charge new economic development opportunities.
Big Data is the ability to collect, process and interpret massive amounts of information and is one of today's most important technological and economic drivers. There is an emerging new industry made of companies that see healthcare as the biggest potential area of application.
Healthcare has historically been delivered by direct communication between doctor and patient limited to the various diagnostic tests prepared following the initial interview. Today, doctors are required to maintain electronic health records (EHR) on their patients.
What's the Future
On any given day the staggering amount of data collected defies human comprehension. Current estimates of 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created daily. Ninety percent of the data in the world has been created in the last two years and it is getting bigger and more ubiquitous every day. Hospitals, medical centers, hospital systems, doctors, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies comprise a trillion-dollar healthcare industry that amasses terabytes and often times petabytes of both structured and unstructured data on everyone. Unfortunately, not enough of this deluge of big data has been systematically collected and stored, and therefore this valuable information has not been aggregated, analyzed, or made available in a format to be readily accessed to improve healthcare.
McKinsey Global Institute recently estimated that if the United States healthcare industry would create $300 billion annually in value if it were to effectively use the growing volume of big data to increase efficiency and quality. Most of this would come from helping reduce healthcare expenditures by almost 8 percent.
Improved Outcomes
Healthcare big data requires advanced technologies to efficiently process the data within a tolerable elapsed time, so organizations can create, collect, search, and share data, while still ensuring accuracy and privacy Algorithms and intelligent analytics can be applied to track outcomes for clinical and surgical procedures, including length of stay, readmission rates, infection rates, mortality, and comorbidity prevention. It can also be used to benchmark effectiveness-to-cost models.
Innovative companies are now learning how to mine the data and unlock this untapped information. One local New Orleans start-up, Better Day Health has developed software that acts as both a clearinghouse and repository of data coming from different doctors, clinics, hospitals and researchers all for the patients benefit. The goal is to standardize and aggregate large-scale clinical data from their subscribing member health systems in their ever-growing national network and provide a more efficient process.
The goal of the BioDistrict is to attract more companies and new investment in the healthcare industry to accelerate research and improve healthcare delivery through real-time human health data exploration using advanced mathematics and computing technology.
Mindful of a patient's privacy, a HIPPA-compliant privacy framework will also strip all patient identification from the data. This enables healthcare leaders to compare how treatment factors affected outcomes-without violating patient privacy-across millions of patients and clinical records.
By finally accessing healthcare big data business can be run more effectively, and healthcare provided more economically.
