Capstone Community Service
Project Spotlight
A hallmark of the Eighth Grade year is participation in the "Beliefs in Action Capstone Project", which integrates Religion, Humanities, and Service Learning. Each week we will feature Eighth Grade students and the Community Service component of their Capstone Project.
Chesapeake Bay Marine Wildlife Preservation by Charlotte
For my project I learned about the Chesapeake Bay and ways to help. I did this by going to the Baltimore Aquarium to learn about the different ways to help the Bay and by going to a tree planting event. I also worked in my garden making changes that would help the Bay. I chose this because I grew up near the Bay and the animals that survive on the Chesapeake, and that made me want to help them.
Winter Relief by Aloni
For my capstone project I did Winter Relief. I did it at Mt. Zion United Methodist church. I made beds, set tables, and prepared food for people that didn't have homes. I chose to do this project because I think it's important that everybody gets help.

Positions of Prayer
The Rev. Diana Carroll, Chaplain and Religion Teacher
Seventh Grade students recently learned about Muslim patterns of daily prayer in Religion class. They used an app to locate the direction of Mecca, washed their hands and removed their shoes, listened to a call to prayer from a mosque in Saudi Arabia, and tried out the different positions of prayer, including "prostration," which represents humility. In reflecting on their experience, students asked excellent questions about separation of genders, modest dress, and how observant Muslims can adapt when travel or work prevent them from praying at the five allotted times of day. The class is looking forward to welcoming a guest speaker from the Islamic Society of Annapolis in a few weeks.
