In Memory: Dr. Tanya Edwards
Dr. Tanya Edwards,
Founder & Medical Director of  Cleveland Clinic's Center for Integrative Medicine,
Died March 12, 2014

Written by: Donna Nowak
Tanya Edwards, MD, was a beautiful example of what a physician and friend should be. She had a keen intellect, was a skilled listener, knowledgeable, caring, gentle, and always present. She blended professionalism and earthiness in a way that touched the soul. She was empathetic and clear-headed; patient and persistent. Kind beyond measure and a friend like no other. Her love and laughter were contagious, and she spread both freely. There was nothing about Tanya Edwards that I did not like. Not a single, solitary thing!

Free Webinar:
The Tricky Case of Triclosan

Free Webinar, April 17, 2:00 p.m. (ET): The Tricky Case of Triclosan

"Triclosan," says Dr. Sarah Janssen, a UCSF physician with a PhD in reproductive toxicology, "is a stupid use of a chemical. It's not safe, not being regulated, and not working as advertised." Yet manufacturers continue to put triclosan in personal care products, most of the nation's soaps - even toothpaste.

Dr. Janssen reviews the science on triclosan's toxicity to consumers, and its potential to add to antimicrobial resistance. Beth Schenk, RN, talks about whys and hows of getting triclosan out of Providence St. Patrick's Hospital, in Missoula, MT. Trevor Russell is available to discuss state bans on sales of triclosan consumer products.

Physician Member Nancy Fazekas Grubb, MD, comments on her experience being listed on AHMA's Find-a-Provider Directory:

"The AHMA has been a wonderful referral resource. I average approximately two referrals monthly. I appreciate that the AHMA forwards the contact information t
o me and the initial email generated by the patient.

Many times I have a heads up as to what I will be seeing. Often, we can initiate dialogue before the actual visit which is more efficient for me. Integrative and holistic medicine is growing in demand. My membership with the AHMA has benefited me from an educational perspective as well as professional one."

Executive Director's Letter
Your role
by Steve Cadwell

This is about your involvement as an AHMA member in the formation of the new Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine.

But first... Stop. What would you be doing if you knew this were the most important moment in your life? The single most critical minute. How about now?

A useful question, you must ask this of yourself or others, perhaps with some frequency. Being in the moment - living   mindfully - is distinctly different from the way many of us operate much of the time, on good days hovering a few steps above autopilot. Mindfulness brings about a heightened sense of clarity, creativity, appreciation and wonder for everything around us.

And so it is as AHMA members ponder the possibilities of partnering with our friends at the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine, which itself is well along the way to transforming to a new Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine.

Molly Roberts I am happy to report the great progress we are having in our discussions with the ABIHM as we join forces to bring our two organizations together into one Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine. In the last month, we have had several meetings related not only to maximizing the benefits for you, our members, but also to making sure that this feels like your emotional and philosophical home. We couldn't ask for better partners in this endeavor, as the ABIHM truly is our sister organization. Read more

You know why you joined AHMA. You know why you practice medicine as you do. More and more, people - your patients - are looking for the integrative, holistic approach to managing their health. At each AHMA retreat, we realize that you, as well as each member, need one another to remain whole, healthy, and able to help others.
