Stressed? Tired? Burned Out?
Using Holistic Health to treat and Prevent Stress

Join us for an evening dedicated to adrenal health!

Thursday May 23, 2013

Three integrative practitioners will discuss the often neglected adrenal glands and how they affect your energy and wellbeing.

Dr. Tamara MacDonald, Naturopathic Physician, will describe the "nuts and bolts" of how the adrenals work. This will include how to assess adrenal functioning and the basics of healthy adrenal support for better energy during the day and restful sleep at night.

Ann Driscoll, Licensed Acupuncturist, will discuss the role of acupuncture, a modality of Oriental Medicine, in the treatment of "adrenal fatigue". She will also highlight how Oriental medicine assesses the pattern of dysfunctional symptoms and will suggest both treatment options and lifestyle changes.

Mary Ellen Derwis-Balaz, massotherapist and Chi Kung practitioner will speak about the practice of incorporating movement, breath and meditation, as found in Chi Kung, to support increased awareness, circulation and relaxation. This practice aligns easily with the other integrative approaches to adrenal health and in addition, empowers the patient through a personal investment in their holistic wellness plan.

Introducing New Board Member

Mary Ellen Derwis-Balaz, LMT, CHT

We would like to introduce our newest Board member, Mary Ellen Derwis-Balaz. At her first Board meeting, she jumped in to coordinate our networking initiatives in NE Ohio. And with her enthusiasm and energy, we are sure to have some wonderful events to come.

Mary Ellen is a Universal Healing Tao Full Instructor and Chi Nei Tsang Teacher CNTT. She has training in Cranial Sacral, Therapeutic Touch, Reiki, Neuromuscular Massage, Myofascial Release, SomatoEmotional Release, Hypnotherapy, Regression Therapy, SRT, Traditional Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, Chi Nei Tsang, deep tissue massage and Thai massage on the table.

Mary Ellen has worn many hats! In the past 20 years, she has worked at world class spas such as Kahala Mandarin Oriental, sports facilities such as the Honolulu Club, several chiropractic offices around the country, and now is in private practice at be in the Tao Chi Center.

"When someone comes to me, I approach their needs within the 5 element model of Taoism (fire, water, earth, wood, fire). This approach allows room for true personal growth and healing at one's own pace. Weekly classes provide support. Workshops provide learning opportunities for therapists to look at healing modalities with a different perspective and ultimately integrate them into their private practice."

Integrating the Spirits of Nature into Holistic Health

The NE Ohio AHMA event on Thursday, April 25, was a magical evening.

Jackie Lowe-Stevenson spoke to the gathering as she beat a drum in a soothing and hypnotic rhythm. She described her work with individuals and organizations and how her team of horses and one zebra help to model, facilitate and support the very best of what it is to be human in connection with others and the world at large.

Neal Szpatura, shaman, reminded us how basic the spirits of nature are to our health and wholeness. He emphasized how we can readily access Spirit as we seek guidance and solutions to our problems and reminded us how nature is often healing in our daily endeavors.

Both speakers highlighted the sacredness of being present, allowing the stillness and welcoming the many gifts nature offers.

We also had much praise for Kirk Hitchens, health coach and chef, Andrew Newman for the delicious and satisfying dinner

Highlighting a Member of AHMA: Carol Baglia, RRT, BBE

After achieving relief from her asthma by using Buteyko, Carol became passionate about letting others know that there is a safe, simple, natural, inexpensive and effective means to eliminate their breathing difficulties.

She attended an extensive training in 2003 given by Jennifer Stark, author of The Carbon Dioxide Syndrome book and was subsequently certified by the Buteyko Institute of Breathing and Health. Carol also pursued and obtained licensure, certification, and registration as a traditional respiratory therapist (RRT).

She established her company, Correct Breathing Concepts, over 10 years ago and holds breathing retraining classes across the country. Buteyko works by restoring normal breathing patterns with behavior changes so the body's own regulating mechanisms avoids symptoms or attacks. This innovative and unique program has been validated by government agencies in the USA, Australia, Russia and England. To further her knowledge, Carol attended advanced training programs with senior educators Masha Anthonissen-Kotousova (Netherlands, 2006) and with Patrick McKeown (Ireland, 2009).

A member of the Buteyko Breathing Educators Association, Carol is now registered as a Buteyko Breathing Educator Trainer qualified to train new educators. She also serves on the board of directors of this nonprofit professional organization which requires continuing education.
