Taking Stock in AHMA by Steve Cadwell
Every so often we pause and take stock of what's truly important. What's working? What needs improvement? Successful businesses do this regularly. So, too, does anyone interested in personal growth, making a difference and being of service to others - all traits common among holistic practitioners. Do you take a regular inventory of what's important in your life? Read more

IMC's Integrative Medicine expert witness list by Molly Roberts, MD
I am happy to report that your Integrative Medicine Consortium has officially begun the project of creating a list of Integrative Medicine expert witnesses. If you would like to be included on this list, read the letter below for guidelines on how to get started. As you may know, the Integrative Medicine Consortium (IMC) is a collaboration of several national Integrative Medicine organizations that have come together to advance the larger collective interests of our Integrative Medicine profession. Your AHMA is one of those organizations belonging to the IMC, so by being a member of the AHMA, you are doing your part to benefit your profession in ways that go beyond each of us individually.

Henry Emmons, MD, author of the nationally acclaimed The Chemistry of Joy, The Chemistry of Calm and The Chemistry of Joy Workbook, has led healing retreats for over 20 years. His practice is dedicated to the holistic application of psychiatry and he has developed programs for patients and providers that activate their own innate resiliency. In his writing and his work with clients he emphasizes mindfulness practice, holistic nutrition and ayurvedic principles to promote a sense of wellbeing that is both accessible to the Western mind and imbued with age-old wisdom.
In this weekend retreat, Henry will share his approach to building a practice that is rejuvenating for the provider while creating a model for how we care for our patients.
Join us to explore your own path to resilience. Based on his written work, this retreat will include principles of functional and holistic nutrition to maintain a healthy mind, mindfulness-based spiritual practices and more. In this acclaimed program, Henry will use stories, personal reflections and discussion in small and large groups to look at what makes the inner lives of healers uniquely life-giving. The workshop will feature discussions on the core factors in resilience, their scientific basis and how they can help one achieve greater vitality, equanimity, openness and connection.
Topics will include:
Ø The pathways to a joyful life
Ø Reflective practices for enhancing intuition and self-knowledge
Ø Creating trustworthy environments
Ø Navigating personal and professional transitions

| ABIHM History |
American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine History
by Robert Anderson, MD, ABIHM
The emergence of the ABIHM was foreshadowed by the formation of the American Holistic Medical Association in 1978. Early that year, four people joined Dr. Evarts Loomis at his holistic retreat center in Hemet, Calif., including Dr. Norm Shealy, Drs. Gladys and Bill McGarey and Dr. Gerald Looney. Under Dr. Shealy's guidance, the founding meeting of the AHMA was convened in that May in Denver. With persistent work by Dr. Elmer Cranton, The Journal of Holistic Medicine was published twice a year through 1986. Over the next 15 years, the AHMA grew into a strong membership organization benefitting over 3,000 attending physicians who were learning about the integrative holistic practice of medicine.
By 1993, a group of us within the AHMA conceived the idea of a 3-day post-conference intensive focusing on the science of integrative holistic medicine. This took place as a post-conference session at the spring AHMA meeting in Kansas City. The course drew 50 attendees, signaling intense interest in highlighting the science of complementary medicine. Successful intensive courses followed in 1994 and 1995. Read more

Holistic
Medicine
And You Need Each Other
|
You know why you joined AHMA. You know why you practice medicine as you do. More and more, people - your patients - are looking for the integrative, holistic approach to managing their health. We realized (again) at last year's retreat, The Healer Within, that you, as well as each member, need one another to remain whole, healthy, and able to help others. AHMA doesn't have chapters in every state, however, we want to help you connect with like-minded professionals whenever and wherever possible. So please, help us help you. If you want to start a chapter in your area, please contact Steve Cadwell; bookmark our calendar and check it often to find helpful events and opportunities to earn CMEs or other applicable education credits. To place events on our calendar that others might benefit from, send an email to Claudia. Thanks for helping us connect you with other members!
