Greetings!
It has been a couple of months since the parties and open houses of the holidays have wrapped up. While the holiday season can be exhausting, it also brings with it a lot of fun, and opportunities to meet new people.
If you are like me, you may have found yourself the guest at a party, where you really didn't know too many others in attendance. Perhaps the "friend of a friend" invited you to a cocktail party, or a relatively new acquaintance invited you to their holiday event.
Whatever the occasion, it likely introduced you to a new group of people, or opened your eyes to a new holiday tradition. It may have made you realize that your new acquaintance could someday be a cherished friend.
The holidays are much the same for nonprofit organizations, and the people who decide to invest in their mission.
Your group may have held a holiday drive, and a "friend of a friend" donated some goods. On the other hand, you may have hosted an open house, and someone new dropped by just to see what your organization is all about.
Whatever the occasion, there's an opportunity to turn that event of happenstance into long-term support.
In this month's newsletter, we will be focusing on the value of following up on first-time donations.
ALL nonprofit organizations have multiple opportunities to attract first-time donors through events, direct mail, holiday solicitations or other one-time appeals.
How does your organization respond to those first-time donors? How do you make contact beyond the standard "form" thank you letter? How do you turn that one-time gift into the beginning of an ongoing relationship?
Sincerely,
Kathy MacNaughton, CFRE

Turning First Time Donors into Year-Long Supporters |
"Opportunity dances with those who are already on the dance floor."
- H. Jackson Brown, American Author
Every year, during the holidays, many organizations gain new "friends" and supporters. The holidays are a time when people feel moved to give back to their community, and our organizations benefit from this spirit of goodwill.
You never know what leads people to your organization's doorsteps. For instance, they may read about an organization in the Express-News "Grace of Giving" series and decide to donate to that group. They may bring donations or supplies to an organization's holiday food, blanket or coat drive, or they may attend a holiday presentation hosted by a nonprofit organization.
However, what happens after the holiday? How do you grow and nurture a new relationship that comes through a casual encounter? What can you do to follow up with those new acquaintances, and turn them into repeat donors or - better yet - dedicated supporters?
Whatever the exposure that brought them to your organization, there is an opportunity that must not be squandered. Organizations must work to translate that holiday goodwill into year-round support to further their core mission.

When you are a new, small or unknown organization - or when first-time donors are just learning about your mission - potential supporters may "test" you with a small donation, to see how you use that donation, how you steward the support and how you manage the relationship. Kathy's Commentary |
You've heard me say it before.
It's all about relationships.
I truly believe that. Building relationships is the foundation of building organizations that transform our communities.
Connecting donors' interests to a nonprofit group's mission makes our communities stronger, more vibrant, and healthier places to raise our families.
As you and your organization look at ways to nurture those donor relationships, also consider your own professional relationships, and how they nurture your work.
Peer relationships, fostered by professional organizations like the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the San Antonio Nonprofit Council (SANCouncil), are important.
The 19 years I have been a member of AFP have been very rewarding. Being part of that network has helped me nurture my peer relationships, discover new opportunities both professionally and personally, and expand my knowledge of development best practices.
As one of the commitments I make to our profession, I started an annual scholarship fund through AFP San Antonio eight years ago for new professionals, many from smaller organizations who may not have a large development staff or a large network of peer support. This year AFP International established a new membership category that helps smaller agencies take advantage of educational opportunities for their development professionals by allowing a transfer within the organization should the original development staff member leave the agency.
There were 25 worthy applicants this year. Congratulations to the following individuals/agencies selected by members of the AFP San Antonio Scholarship Committee:
Peer relationships are important and so is the power of mentorships. We all need mentors, and in return, we should each BE a mentor. I know from my own experience, I have gained a lot of valuable perspective from the mentors in my life, and I have learned just as much by being a mentor to others.
So, who are YOUR professional "heroes"? Who do you strive to be more like? Who do you know who could be a mentor to you? But just as important, what can YOU do to be a mentor to OTHERS? Reach behind you and pull another development professional or volunteer up to the next rung on the ladder. It will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your career! |
