/ MAYOR LICCARDO ANNOUNCES MANUFACTURING INITIATIVE IN TIME FOR NATIONAL MANUFACTURING DAY
#sjmanufacturing
Mayor Sam Liccardo recently announced the "We are Built in San Jose" manufacturing initiative to preserve and strengthen manufacturing activity, broaden prosperity, and create a pathway to middle income jobs in the City. "...I am committed to collaborating with our partners to create a competitive environment where they will flourish and generate more tech manufacturing jobs," said Mayor Sam Liccardo. The City will provide incentives to strengthen its manufacturing industry, including: providing permit fee waivers for manufacturing building retrofits, a 60-day permit approval process for expanding and relocating manufacturing companies, a 1% building and structures tax for new construction and tenant improvements for manufacturers, and preserving scarce industrial lands to promote growth of the manufacturing sector. Mayor Liccardo believes the initiative gives manufacturers confidence that the City and its partners are developing the right economic climate for growth. In addition, efforts to "next shore manufacturing" will promote opportunities to grow middle income jobs for San Jose's unemployed and underemployed residents. Every year, the City celebrates National Manufacturing Day, which is October 2, 2015, by working with area manufacturers to host industry lectures and facility tours. This year, Jabil and Grainger, as well as other manufacturers in San Jose will host onsite events. "This is a great day to get a behind the scenes tour in this growing industry," said Chris Burton, San Jose's Office of Economic Development Senior Business Development Manager. / INSIGHT REALTY RECOMMENDED TO IMPROVE PARKSIDE HALL IN DOWNTOWN SJ
#sjplace
City staff is going to recommend to Council to approve the selection of Insight Realty, a local development firm headed by Dennis Randall, following a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to improve 180 Park Avenue, also known as Parkside Hall. Parkside Hall is a City-owned parcel in Downtown San Jose. The project concept, called Museum Place, presents a soaring 270-foot modern glass tower with outdoor landscaped terraces that combines homes, offices, a hotel and new expansion space for the Tech Museum of Innovation. "We spent a lot of time coming up with the mix," said Randall. "It all starts with The Tech. It is an iconic space and we want to lever off that. We thought, it's all about innovation, so why not have innovative companies right there?" Nanci Klein, Assistant Director of San Jose's Office of Economic Development noted, "The proposal that Insight Realty put forward is very supportive and complementary to the Tech, which is a critical partner to us. It would be a fabulous re-use of the land to accomplish a mixed-use facility that benefits the Tech greatly and puts an exciting gateway area into San Jose." To read more, click here. For more information, contact Andy Constable, Senior Real Estate Development Manager, who helped create the development opportunity and composed the RFQ.

/ USPTO WILL OPEN OCTOBER 15 AT SAN JOSE CITY HALL
#sjdowntown
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Director Michelle Lee recently announced the permanent Silicon Valley USPTO satellite office will open at San Jose City Hall on October 15, 2015. This office will assist the USPTO in fostering and protecting innovation. Lee said the office will benefit local startups and that having access to examiners, either face-to-face or by video conference, will speed up the process and reduce costs. "You have a limited budget, you have lots of other priorities," said Lee. The City of San Jose and the Silicon Valley region are known as one of the most prodigious and innovative entrepreneurial communities in the country.  The Silicon Valley office will benefit from hiring local talent for both examiners and Patent Trial and Appeal Board judges within the intellectual property and technical fields and will help entrepreneurs market their products quickly and provide resources tailored to local startups. The USPTO's temporary satellite office in Menlo Park will remain open until the San Jose City Hall office opens. Click here for more information, or contact Cara Douglas, Senior Business Communications Officer.

#northsj
Cogswell College will relocate to a new home at 191 Baypointe Parkway in North San Jose in September 2015.
