FEATURED STORIES

/ SAN JOSE IS RANKED AS ONE OF COOLEST PLACES TO LIVE IN THE US
#sjplace

San Jose recently ranked as one of the Top 20 Coolest Cities in the U.S. to Live, in part, because of the increase in local residents frequenting Downtown, the availability of non-chain restaurants, abundant entertainment and cultural venues per capita, and its growing population. The report, by Forbes and Sperling's Best Places, determined the "coolness" factors by calculating how much entertainment, recreation and local food was offered in each location, as well as the percent of 20- to 30-year-olds, overall population growth since 2000, and the ethnic diversity of people living there. San Jose tied with Los Angeles as one of the "coolest cities." It ranked higher than Los Angeles in the "Foodie" category with 79.7 percent of the available eats being local, non-chain establishments. The results also showed that the net migration in San Jose rose by 2.2 percent between 2010 and 2013, suggesting that the population is growing and people are staying put. #sjtalent

A recent study by Nerdwallet of 75 of the largest U.S. metropolitan areas found San Jose is the best place for STEM graduates in the nation given the large percentage of STEM occupations. Several factors were analyzed including the annual mean wage for STEM occupations in each metro area and median gross rent as a cost of living metric. The San Jose region ranked first in part to having the highest annual average STEM wage of $111,746. In addition, the size of STEM occupations as a percentage of all jobs demonstrates the robustness of STEM industries and the availability of STEM jobs locally. The study found San Jose to have the highest percentage of STEM occupations as a percentage of all occupations in the country with 17.3% of all San Jose area job occupations related to STEM, compared to 10.5% of all job occupations in the SF Metro area.
