work2future recently recognized Zazzle, TiVo, Wells Fargo and others as outstanding work2future Business Partners at the 2013 Community Builder Awards Ceremony. This annual event recognizes companies for their achievement and service in the area of workforce development. Zazzle was selected for donating extra inventory including everything from shirts to pillows to the local San Jose community. TiVo received an award for their unique intern programs, which provide recent veterans and college graduates an environment for transitioning into corporate life; many program participants received fulltime jobs as a result. Wells Fargo was recognized for their ongoing support with entrepreneurs, small businesses and job seekers. / CITY WINS THREE OF SEVEN TOP AWARDS FOR INNOVATION, JOB DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH

The City of San Jose won three of the seven awards presented at the recent "Turning Red Tape into Red Carpet" event sponsored by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG) for innovative projects and services in the public sector that led to job growth and helped spur economic development. Silicon Valley experts evaluated 21 public agencies and more than 30 applications. The Mineta San Jose International Airport Expansion Project won the "Responding to Globalization" award. The City's High-Rise Incentive Program received the "Sustainable New Development" award, and Samsung's Expansion Project won for "Real Estate Redevelopment and Reuse." / STOREFRONT INITIATIVE KICKS OFF PHASE II ADDING RESTAURANTS

The Office of Economic Development is pleased to announce the release of Phase II of the SJ Storefronts Initiative, which includes grant funds for restauranteurs. This $250,000 grant initiative is designated to help small businesses lease vacant spaces in San Jose's pedestrian-oriented retail districts by offsetting the cost of City permits, fees and taxes. The goal is to strengthen the economic vitality of the City's Neighborhood Business Districts and Downtown. The maximum amount per grant is $16,000. Laser manufacturer Continuum is relocating from Santa Clara to North San Jose after recently signing a five-year lease to occupy 51,000 square feet in Legacy Baytech Park. The company intends to commence the lease effective January 1. Continuum was founded in 1975 and offers high-energy, solid-state laser products used in scientific, industrial and commercial applications such as spectroscopy, materials analysis and x-ray generation.
