Bibb County Area Included In Wild Turkey Study

The State has entered into a partnership with Auburn University researchers this year to begin a five-year study designed to determine the reproduction, survival and harvest rates as well as movement patterns of wild turkey in Alabama.

During this five year project, both male and female turkeys will be fitted with transmitters and/or leg bands in and around the 44,500-acre J.D. Martin/Skyline Wildlife Management Area in Jackson County, the 60,732-acre Oakmulgee WMA in Hale, Bibb, Perry and Tuscaloosa counties and the 19,480-acre Scotch WMA in Clarke County.

Harvested birds may be fitted with a with radio transmitters and/or leg bands.  Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Section Acting Chief Ray Metzler said hunters should return the transmitters to the Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. A return address is printed on the devices.   "It is very important for us to retrieve each of the transmitters," Metzler said. "The data collected will help shape turkey management decisions for future generations of turkey hunters."
