MCAA's Construction Technology Conference Spotlighted New and Emerging Innovations The MCAA Technology Conference Will Help You Thrive in a High-Tech World

Last week, a number of MCAA's progressive contractor members got an up close and personal look at cutting  edge technologies that will enable them to manage projects and their business more efficiently, effectively and profitably. MCAA's inaugural Construction Technology Conference, which took place June 8-9 in Chicago, showcased new and emerging technologies in service, modeling, virtual construction, business development, collaboration and productivity enhancement. MCAA President Steve Dawson opened the conference with the announcement that this conference was just the start of MCAA's ongoing Construction Technology Initiative aimed at introducing and showcasing technologies that members will be using to improve their business and project operations. Brian Helm of Mechanical, Inc. (Freeport, IL) and chairman of MCAA's Education Committee, which organized the conference, remarked that, "A lot of what you see is here now and smart companies are using it."

A centerpiece of the conference was a technology showcase-organized by BuiltWorlds, a Chicago-based company that connects start-up technology BuiltWorlds companies with construction businesses-that gave attendees the chance to also test-drive some new and emerging technologies. 3D scanners drew a lot of attention, including Trimble's new DPI-8 handheld scanner and a product that they are developing with Google called Tango. Leica Geosystems' new Pegasus scanner that fits in a backpack was on display and Autodesk showed off a product still in development that constantly measures jobsite quality. It fits on the outside of a helmet like a head lamp and measures air quality, noise levels and will alert a supervisor when a worker falls. XOEye Technologies explained how immersive eyewear, such as Google Glass, could connect workers remotely from as far away as another continent. An array of excellent speakers explained how these new technologies are transforming, leveraging and sharing data for improved jobsite and business management. A run-down on the conference will be featured in the June 2015 issue of the MCAA Reporter and is also online in the BuiltWorlds website at http://www.builtworlds.com/news/2015/6/9/mcaa-conference-recap.

MCAA/UA Join Forces to Promote Jobsite Safety
MCAA and the United Association are working together to protect mechanical construction and service workers from workplace hazards. An important component of that effort is to ensure that those who provide safety training to craft workers, including safety trainers, safety directors, and industry supervisors, are educated on the industry's latest safe work practices and procedures. MCAA's annual Safety Directors Conference is an excellent forum for the most up-to-date safety information and training education. This past January, MCAA hosted 30 UA safety trainers and other UA members at its 2015 Conference in San Antonio, TX. An excellent UA video of the conference activities, which will be used in the UA's training education programs, is on YouTube at http://youtu.be/GZXPwYZp-N8 and also included below:
