MCAA Nears Tripling Student Internship Grants

Students Who Intern in Mechanical Contracting Tend to Pursue Mechanical Careers At the beginning of this year, MCAA announced the Year of the Intern and our goal of doubling the number of Student Internship Grants awarded to MCAA members who hire interns over those awarded in 2014. We blew by the 166 interns needed to achieve that goal and are rapidly approaching triple the number of grants awarded to MCAA members this year over last. As of this date, 228 grants have been awarded for a total of $342,000. The Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation provides the funding for the grants. The Year of the Intern initiative was designed to encourage MCAA members to hire college students with an interest in pursuing a career with our industry. Experience has shown that once a student gets to know our industry through an internship experience, their career choices will favor mechanical contracting, mechanical service or plumbing contracting. MCAA Releases Safety Bulletin on OSHA's New Standard on Confined Spaces in Construction

MCAA Releases Safety Bulletin on New OSHA Standard On May 4, 2015, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released a new standard on Confined Spaces in Construction, which takes effect on August 3, 2015. Although construction employers have voluntarily complied with OSHA's general industry standard on Permit-Required Confined Spaces since the 1990s, this new standard imposes additional requirements. And, although the general industry standard on Permit-Required Confined Spaces and the new standard are similar, there are differences between the two. The new construction standard:

  • Requires the designated "competent person" for confined spaces to perform a jobsite evaluation on all sites that could have confined space hazards;
  • Imposes specific requirements for the exchange of information with affected workers before they enter into confined spaces;
  • Compels contractors to perform continuous air contaminant and dust monitoring in confined spaces;
  • Imposes a requirement that affected employers coordinate emergency response services before workers enter into confined spaces; and
  • Changes the definition of "Isolation" to "Isolate or Isolation" and includes an employer's use of physical barriers to prevent contact between workers and physical hazards inside confined spaces.

MCAA's Safety Bulletin (www.mcaa.org/private) also provides a summary of the new standard. Additional resources are being developed to help MCAA members comply with the new standard. These resources will be free as a benefit of MCAA membership, and will be made available to members prior to the date the standard takes effectFor more information, please contact Pete Chaney at pchaney@mcaa.org.

Sign Up for the Next MCAA Green Building Webinar

Ever Tried a Webinar?

The next MCAA Green Building Webinar on May 28 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time will focus on Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), an increasingly popular contract delivery method for sustainable green building projects. Courtney France of France Sustainable Solutions will explain how these projects differ from traditional design-bid-build projects and will outline MCAA members' role in this delivery method. She will also discuss how MCAA members' scope of work and services may be exposed to increased risks, as well as rewards, on IPD projects. Now is the time to find out more about this growing industry trend, so sign up today at https://mcaa.webex.com. This webinar is free as a benefit of MCAA membership. MCAA, MSCA Revise Model NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Program for Service
MCAA, MSCA Revise Model NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Program for ServiceMCAA and MSCA have just revised the Model NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Program for Service to make its contents consistent with recent revisions to the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70E - 2015). The model program outlines electrical safety procedures for those who work on HVAC equipment pushing 480 volts or less. "The program is based largely on information from NFPA 70E - 2015, Article 130 - Work Involving Electrical Hazards and includes some key changes from the 2012 version of the standard," according to Tom Skaggs, Chairman of MCAA's Safety and Health Committee and Vice President - Safety for the Murphy Company. A key change in the new version of the NFPA 70E requirements affects service technicians who perform specific tasks on the control voltage side of equipment. Those technicians will be able to perform those tasks with substantially less personal protective equipment (PPE) than was required under the 2012 standard, once certain conditions are met. The new standard requires separate risk assessments for arc flash risk and electrical shock risk, and those assessments must show that the complete array of Category 2 PPE is not necessary for worker protection before the service technician can omit the PPE specified by the risk assessments. The revised Model NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Program for Service is now available from MCAA's Bookstore at www.mcaa.org/store. MCAA and MSCA members are welcome to download the publication at no charge as a benefit of membership.
ALI-G Nearing Cut-Off...Only Two Spaces Left
ALI-G Nearing Cut-Off...Only Two Spaces Left The market and economic environment in which our industry is now operating is more challenging every day and promises to become more so over the next few years.Your need for optimum leadership and strategic planning skills is, therefore, more critical than ever. Contact Dennis Langley at dlangley@mcaa.org for a flier, curriculum schedule and registration form. Don't delay because the program is almost fully subscribed.
There's Still Time to Sign Up for the NFPA Arc Flash Safety Training Webinar
NFPA Safety Training Webinars Are Open for Registration Make sure your employees are safe when they're working around electricity by signing them up for the NFPA 70E Qualified-Level Arc Flash Safety Training Webinar. The webinar is designed for employees who are potentially exposed to live conductors of 50 volts of electricity or more during their workday, and especially mechanical service technicians who work on units that generate up to 480 volts. The next webinars will take place on May 19, 2015, at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. Presented by The Hilgeman Group, the session covers all applicable OSHA and NFPA requirements (including the new NFPA revised 70E requirements that took effect on January 1), best practices and provides participants with real-world accident information to reinforce the training.
