MCAA National Update for October 13, 2014

Hear Former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta at MCAA 2015 Opening Session

See Leon Panetta at MCAA 2015

For over four years, Leon Panetta was in charge of U.S. efforts to keep America and its citizens safe by confounding the plans of our enemies overseas.  As Secretary of Defense, he fought against Congressional efforts to reduce the Department of Defense budget to meet across-the-board budget cuts required by the U.S. debt reduction plan. As director of the Central Intelligence Agency, he oversaw the U.S. military operation that led to the death of Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden on May 1, 2011.  He also increased U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan that caused the death of over 50 suspected Al-Qaeda militants.  Mr. Panetta's recent book - Worthy Fights: A Memoir of Leadership in War and Peace - is a bestseller.  Be sure to join us at the Opening Session of MCAA 2015 (March 8-12 in Wailea, Maui, HI) for Panetta's fascinating insights on world events and how they're affecting American interests. Go to http://www.mcaa.org/mcaa2015 to discover who else is coming. We encourage you to make your hotel plans as early as possible since rooms are filling quickly.

MCAA's 2014 Student Chapter Summit was a Soaring Success!
Student Chapter SummitMore than 220 MCAA Student Chapter members, faculty advisors, MCAA members, local association executives and guests came to the New Jersey/New York area for the 2014 Student Chapter Summit.  Hosted by the MCA of New Jersey and the MCA of New York, the Summit opened on October 10 with a welcome from Robert J. Durr, Jr, president of the MCA of New Jersey, and William McMorrrow, president of the MCA of New York.  MCAA President Chuck Fell delivered a presentation about the growing career opportunities available in the mechanical construction, service and plumbing industry for bright, well-qualified and ambitious young professionals. The educational sessions began with a three-part estimating series that included the Cost of an Hour of Labor delivered by MCAA 2011 President Mark Rogers.  Robert J. Durr, Jr. followed with a session on General Conditions and Kathleen McCauley of McCauley Mechanical Construction (Bridgeview, IL) led a session on the Take-Off.  Students teamed up to come up with an estimate on a project, based on the information from the three sessions, for the Annual Mini Competition. On Saturday, John Powell of Lawson Mechanical Contractors (San Leandro, CA) announced the 2014-2015 MCAA Student Chapter Competition - the construction of a student services center at the University of California - Davis.  Woody Woodall of Sauer Group (Ashburn, VA) led a session about the importance of customer relationships to building your business.  And, Professor Maureen Weidner of Southern Polytechnic State University (Marietta, GA) and David Lazear of NIBCO shared their advice about how to create a successful resume and present yourself effectively in an interview.  The featured tour, organized by Michael F. Russo of Fresh Meadow Mechanical Corporation (Fresh Meadows, NY) was of the mechanical systems supporting the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. A boat cruise around Manhattan topped off the day.  Our thanks to Armistead Mechanical, CNA Insurance, MMC Contractors, NIBCO, Viega, Victaulic, Zurn Industries and Get the Point for sponsoring the Summit this year.

Need Help Pressing the Point for Needed Pension Reform?

The MCAA/Horizon Pension Inventory 2014 Edition will soon be released to help MCAA members' Congressional outreach for multiemployer pension reform in Congress this year. Advocacy efforts are now shifting to all Senators, and particularly those on the Senate Finance, Health Education and Pensions (HELP), and Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committees. Members are urged to stress to Senators on all three committees that the Solutions Not Bailouts legislative reform proposal is sound pension, federal fiscal, and government operations policy. It preserves and strengthens multiemployer plans for participants and contributing employers, avoids the need for federal financial support for failing plans, and helps get the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) off the government's most endangered agencies list.  All MCA local affiliate members and their employees, your local UA leaders and other affected employer associations are urged to reach out to their lawmakers.  Ask for their support and a meeting before the general elections using Voter Voice at http://www.mcaa.org/advocacy.  Tell lawmakers ...

"We can't wait until 2015 or later for sound remedial action. Any further delay in enactment is a very significant delay in actuarial terms as participants age; employers drop out; the cost of contributions, benefits and plan administration increases steeply for the contributing employers that remain in the plan; the risk of an asset return reversal grows sharply; and PBGC's looming deficit becomes more inevitable.  The SNB proposal is well conceived, broadly supported by labor and management and given great credence by PBGC and other experts.  The retirement security of a great many participants and retirees in the state depend on your sound, prudent, and timely remedial action this year."

When you schedule a meeting with your lawmaker(s), please contact John McNerney of MCAA (jmcnerney@mcaa.org) for back-up information for your meeting. The MCAA/Horizon Pension Inventory 2014 Edition contains a current state-by-state list of all multiemployer plans with Pension Protection Act Zone status information as of the close of the 2012 Plan Year for all multiemployer plans in all industries.  This listing will help you alert your Senators to the magnitude of the problem in your state. Go to http://www.solutionsnotbailouts.com for other state-by-state and Congressional district information about plans and participants in each district.
