MCAA National Update for August 25, 2014
Multiemployer Pension Reform Advocates Remain Active Through Congressional Recess

MCAA's Government Affairs Committee and the National Coordinating Committee for Multiemployer Plans (NCCMP) coalition are continuing to vigorously lobby lawmakers in Washington, DC and in Congressional districts to address multiemployer pension reforms - Solutions Not Bailouts (SNB) - before Congress adjourns after the November elections. A legislative proposal is expected soon. Until then, it is essential for MCAA members and their UA partners to lobby their Senators and/or House representatives to raise the issue's prominence in all Congressional offices on both sides of the aisle. The key points to be made are: 1) the multiemployer defined benefit pension system is critically in need of reform; the recent economic recession and stock market declines took a heavy toll; 2) the Solutions Not Bailouts proposal is a broad and effective remedy that doesn't require taxpayer assistance; 3) SNB broadens options for plan sponsors to fix funding issues earlier than the law currently allows; there are no federal mandates; 4) SNB allows plan sponsors - businesses and employees - to make their own judgments about adopting alternate plan designs that offer a more solid, stable financial foundation for the future; and 5) SNB helps the federal government avoid the looming insolvency of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.  Please consider reaching out to your Representatives and Senators this week and next by scheduling a meeting with your lawmakers in their district offices.  Be persistent.  Every meeting counts - at the home office, at the county fair, or in town hall meetings.  Go to www.mcaa.org/advocacy for a letter that you can email to lawmakers' district offices which explains the issue, asks for their active support and requests an in-person meeting with the lawmaker in their district office during the August recess.  Open the Voter Voice email system, type in your name and address in the "My Profile" box,  and the system will generate an email for your lawmakers based on your zip code; use either your home or business address. If you schedule a meeting with the lawmaker, please contact John McNerney at jmcnerney@mcaa.org  for backup information and go to http://www.solutionsnotbailouts.com for background materials. After the meeting, please email jmcnerney@mcaa.org with a brief synopsis of who participated in the meeting and the outcome for MCAA and the NCCMP coalition to follow up with Washington, DC, Congressional offices.
