mcaa Mourns Passing of 1997 President Wayne T. Day

Wayne T. Day, 1997 MCAA president and former president of John J. Kirlin, Inc. (Rockville, MD), passed away on June 17.  He was 70.  A graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in chemical engineering, Day was president of the Kirlin Group from 1984 until 2006, when he retired. Under his leadership, the company grew substantially with the opening of offices in Florida and the Carolinas, development of a fire sprinkler company and the establishment of a construction management business unit that contracts with the federal government on projects throughout the U.S. Day was actively involved with the industry through the MCA of Metropolitan Washington and the MCAA. He was involved with MCAA's industry education initiatives, a member of MCAA Board of Directors and served as president from 1997 to 1998. He was also active in the community and gave generously to many causes, especially those that support educational opportunities for economically disadvantaged students.  A memorial service is planned for Monday, July 14 at the Potomac United Methodist Church in Potomac, MD.  In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Mr. Day's memory to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and designated for the Wayne T. Day Foundation for Alzheimer's Prevention Research Fund II (550 N. Broadway, Suite 916, Baltimore, MD 21205).

New BIM Instructor Named for MCAA'S NEI BIM for Mechanical Contractors Series

Brett Endres, senior project manager and BIM manager with Modern Construction Services LLC (Seattle, WA), recently co-instructed the Kick Starting BIM Because You Must course with Pete Mackenzie for the New England Mechanical Contractors Association (NEMCA). Endres is replacing Pete Mackenzie as lead instructor for the BIM for Mechanical Contractors series, who is retiring after nearly 40 years in the industry.  Endres began his career as a detailer for University Mechanical Contractors, Inc. (Seattle, WA). During his 20-year tenure, he grew the Detailing Department from a two-person shop to a group of 26, providing 3D modeling, estimating, and trade coordination services.  He also spearheaded the re-implementation of Autodesk Fabrication (CAD/EST) across the organization, streamlining UMC's detailing and estimating efforts. Brett is very knowledgeable about virtual design and construction (VDC) and has made numerous national presentations on topics such as Re-Implementation of Trade Software, Advanced Modeling Software and IPD, The Fundamentals of Organizational / Project Success and the Fundamentals of Software Implementation for Contractors. To schedule Endres for a course, please contact him directly at brett@moderncs.com or call 206-707-1128.  

Registration Is Still Open for Life-Saving NFPA 70E Qualified-Level Arc Flash Safety Training Webinar

If your service technicians or other employees who work with or around electrical equipment have not yet participated in the life-saving training provided by the NFPA 70E Qualified-Level Arc Flash Safety Training webinar, there's still time to register for the next webinars on June 24, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. MCAA/MSCA members' employees who are potentially exposed to live conductors of 50 volts of electricity or more during their workday, and especially mechanical service technicians working on units that push 480 volts or less, should attend. Presented by the Hilgeman Group, the session covers all applicable OSHA and NFPA requirements, best practices and NFPA's recent changes to the 70E requirements and provides participants with real-world accident information that will reinforce the importance of this training.
