MCAA National Update for May 19, 2014

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR MSCA'S 2014 EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE

MSCA Educational Conference

This year's conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa in Huntington Beach, CA, from September 28-October 1, 2014. The conference theme was inspired by the 1966 documentary Endless Summer, which was based on the idea that it is possible to follow the summer around the world. Packed with innovative and unconventional sessions and speakers, MSCA 2014 is designed to give attendees the tools they need to turn challenges into an "endless summer" of successes. Be sure to register today to make your Endless Summer a reality! The early-bird rate ends June 27. Contact Sobeida Orantes (saorantes@mcaa.org) with questions about conference and hotel registrations.

ARE YOU USING TURNOVER MEETINGS TO IMPROVE PROFITABILITY?

If you don't know the five keys that are the core of every project - large or small - then you need to attend MCAA's 2014 Mid-Year Conference (June 23-25, Indianapolis, IN). Rick Perosa, president of H.T. Lyons, Inc. (Allentown, PA), will explain how these keys should be communicated in a turnover meeting to ensure project processes and procedures work as efficiently as possible and that profits are maximized. These five keys include: risk (including risk identification, risk quantification and accounting for the risk); labor; material and equipment (including rigging and safety); subcontracts; and General Conditions. This session will help you acquire a better understanding of how to improve the management of your projects through more effective communication with key players before projects begin.  Find out more about this valuable conference and then register at http://www.mcaa.org/education/mcaa/midyear.

MSCA INTRODUCES THE SALES INSTITUTE

MSCA is proud to announce the launch of the Sales Institute, an MSCA University program. This new MSCA offering is the first and only focused training program specific to service sales in the HVACR industry. With four phases that support all levels of service sales - from leaders of sales teams to entry-level employees and advanced-level personnel - attendees of Sales Institute programs will acquire skills and expertise that can readily be applied to both maintenance and project sales. The official launch announcement will be made at the MSCA 2014 Educational Conference in Huntington Beach, CA. Kicking off this new program will be the Sales Leadership Symposium, which is the first step to ensuring that sales staff have the training and skills needed to succeed. Visit the Sales Institute Web page to learn more about all available programs. Contact Barbara Dolim (bdolim@mcaa.org) with any questions about the Sales Institute.

MCAA RECEIVES A RECORD 94 REQUESTS FOR 2014 STUDENT INTERNSHIP GRANTS

On May 15 - the deadline for 2014 Student Internship Grant requests - MCAA had received 94 requests from members, a new record. Since 2005, MCAA has offered the grants to all members who hire student interns for summer work, coops or part-time positions. Preference is given to those who hire interns from MCAA student chapters. Funded by the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF), the $1,200 grants help cover the intern's salary, but they also bring well-qualified students and MCAA members together for a mutually beneficial learning experience. The student gains valuable work experience while the employer learns new techniques, approaches and technologies that can help his/her business. Each year, the number of requests has grown as MCAA members learn about the value of the grants beyond just the dollars. The Career Development Committee, which administers the grants, will meet next month to consider the grant requests and decide on their disposition.

FIND OUT HOW WATER METERS CAN OPTIMIZE A BUILDING'S WATER USAGE

If you want to learn how to best manage water usage for new or existing buildings, be sure to register for MCAA's next Green Webinar on June 19, 1:00 p.m. Eastern time.  Courtney France of France Sustainable Solutions will explain why water metering is an effective way to measure and track water use as well as assist in saving water.
