MCAA National Update for May 12, 2014

is your company ahead of the game or STILL STRUGGLING TO keep up?

Having (and getting the most out of) the latest technologies and devices for managing data, responding to client requests and seamless communication with employees will help your company stay ahead of your competition. That's what MCAA's 2014 Mid-Year Conference (June 23-25, Indianapolis, IN) is all about.  Day 1 is all about technology and communication resources and you'll learn:

  • What technologies and communications tools are in place now and what's coming down the line;
  • How to manage data more efficiently and confidently through the "cloud;"
  • Construction solutions that use free web-based services and mobile applications;
  • How to bring your office with you in tablets, iPads and smartphones;
  • Keeping in touch with your office, suppliers and customers while in the field; and
  • Avoiding productivity losses by knowing how and when to text, e-mail, Tweet, "cc" or "Reply All."

MCAA's leaders are bringing themselves and their teams-because it's that important to get an edge, so plan to join them. Register now at http://www.mcaa.org/education/mcaa/midyear.

NCPWB'S 70th Annual Technical Committee meeting focused on certification, testing , worker safety

The  National Certified Pipe Welding Bureau's 70th Annual Technical Committee Meeting brought together 94 attendees to Marco Island Beach, FL for educational briefings and discussions on a wide range of topics that concerned welding, brazing and welder qualifications. Featured were UA's written practices for the qualification and certification of Non-Destructive Test (NDT) personnel and recent changes to ASME IX allowing Ultrasonic (UT) testing of test coupons.  Attendees also learned about how to reduce construction industry workers' exposure to metal fumes by increasing the availability and use of welding fumes controls as well as adjusting welding work practices. One session focused on Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs) and Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSIs) and how workers can avoid or reduce injuries at (and away from) the workplace.

LAST CALL ...FOR 2014 STUDENT INTERNSHIP GRANT REQUESTS

May 15 is the deadline for requests for 2014 Student Internship Grants.  If you're planning to hire (or already have hired) a student intern for the summer or a co-op student, then be sure to send us an online request for a $1,200 grant.  Funded by the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF) and administered by MCAA's Career Development Committee, the grant is designed to encourage MCAA members to hire well-qualified and educated young people who are hoping for a career with our industry.  The grant helps cover the intern's salary, but it also provides a means to bring college students majoring in engineering, construction management or other disciplines related to our industry into jobs that will give them practical experience and a desire to pursue full-time employment with an MCAA member after they graduate.  Even better, the intern often brings skills with new technologies, new insights and perspectives on project challenges and an enthusiasm for the work that employers appreciate and often benefit from.  It's easy to request a grant; just go to www.mcaa.org/careers and click on the red box for information and the online form.

MSCA/PCA PLUMBING 101 LUNCH AND LEARN NOW AVAILABLE

MSCA and PCA just released its latest Lunch and Learn template for Plumbing 101, an introduction to plumbing basics for building owners and managers. Go to www.msca.org to access the presentation.  A Lunch and Learn is a PowerPoint presentation that you can offer to customers and prospects on an HVACR or plumbing topic. The presentation can be customized with your company's logo, and includes talking points for each slide. The programs are a total of 45 minutes in length, including an introduction, 20-30 minute presentation, and time for questions and networking. It is suggested that lunch be provided to invitees during the presentation-hence the name "Lunch and Learn." Visit the MSCA website atwww.msca.org to access all available Lunch and Learn templates, which are free to MSCA and PCA members as a benefit of membership.

NFPA 70E QUALIFIED-LEVEL ARC FLASH SAFETY TRAINING WEBINAR SAVES LIVES

If your service technicians or other employees who work with or around electrical equipment have not yet participated in the life-saving training provided by the NFPA 70E Qualified-Level Arc Flash Safety Training webinar, make sure they register for one of the next webinars on May 20, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. MCAA/MSCA members' employees who are potentially exposed to live conductors of 50 volts of electricity or more during their workday, and especially mechanical service technicians working on units that generate 480 volts or less, should attend. Presented by the Hilgeman Group, the session covers all applicable OSHA and NFPA requirements, best practices and NFPA's recent changes to the 70E requirements and provides participants with real-world accident information that will reinforce the importance of this training. Contact the Hilgeman Group (ahilgeman@frontier.com) to register.

SHARE YOUR MANAGEMENT IDEA, LIFT UP YOUR INDUSTRY

President John F. Kennedy once said, "A rising tide lifts all boats."  An innovative management idea that helped your company overcome a problem or obstacle in the office or in the field and then achieve its success could help others and create a tide of growth and prosperity for our industry. The E. Robert Kent Award for Management Innovation, one of MCAA's most distinguished honors, is the means by which you can share your idea and, therefore, help to "lift all boats." Named for an industry icon who believed strongly that the best ideas should be shared, the E.  Robert Kent Awardbrings to light proven management innovations that can help companies throughout our industry overcome growth-hindering business challenges. The winner will be announced at the 2015 MCAA convention in Maui, HI.  Nominations are now open for the 2014 E. Robert Kent Award.  Go to http://www.mcaa.org/awards/erobertkent/ for more information and the downloadable form.
