MCAA 2014
FIND OUT IF SOCIAL MEDIA SHOULD BE PART OF YOUR BUSINESS OPERATIONS

Social media--Facebook, LinkedIn, You Tube, Twitter and similar services--are becoming an important part of business culture.  And, more and more companies in our industry are using social media services to market their business and communicate with their customers and employees. If you want to know how to get on board with this new wave of communication and stay competitive in your market or are interested in learning more about how to make better use of social media, then drop by social media expert Dave Nelsen's session--Social Media for Business-How to Use It; Why You Can't Ignore It--at MCAA 2014 (March 9-13, Scottsdale, AZ).  The session will provide insights, ideas and understanding of transformative social media that will help you increase marketing effectiveness, strengthen your company's competitive advantage, increase customer satisfaction, and improve employee communications.  Find out more about this and other sessions at MCAA 2014 by viewing the program at www.mcaa.org/mcaa2014 and then register online.

2014 PRE-FAB CONFERENCE IS SOLD OUT!

You will be contacted in April if space becomes available. Contact Taj Homayouni (thomayouni@mcaa.org) for details. Our thanks to W E Bowers (Beltsville, MD) and Kirlin Mid-Atlantic LLC (Rockville, MD) for hosting the facility tours.

STUDENT CHAPTER COMPETITION FINAL FOUR TEAMS SELECTED

The judging is over and the votes are counted, setting the finalists for MCAA's 2013-2014 Student Chapter Competition.  The four teams that scored best and will advance to the final round are: MCA of Metro Washington Student Chapter at University of Maryland - College Park; MCAA Student Chapter at Milwaukee School of Engineering; Student Chapter of Specialty Contracting (Mechanical/Electrical) at Southern Polytechnic State University; and Sacramento State Chapter of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America. The judging took place on January 9 at MCAA's office in Rockville, MD.  The judges, all of whom are members of the Career Development Committee, were Kenneth Durr of Durr Mechanical Construction (New York, NY), Roeland Hoeke of H.T. Lyons (Allentown, PA), John Powell of Lawson Mechanical Contractors (San Leandro, CA) and J.L. Williams of Ryan & Associates (Davenport, IA).  The finalists will present their proposals at MCAA 2014 on March 11 in Scottsdale, AZ, and the results will be announced during the Annual Awards Ceremony on March 12.  Congratulations to the Final Four!

MCAA/UA ASK FOR CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS' SUPPORT OF SOLUTIONS NOT BAILOUTS MULTIEMPLOYER PENSION PLAN REFORM

MCAA President Michael R. Cables and UA General President William P. Hite last week sent a joint UA/MCAA letter to Senate and House of Representatives leaders requesting their support of the multiemployer pension plan proposal developed by the Retirement Security Review Commission of the National Coordination Committee for Multiemployer Plans (NCCMP), Solutions Not Bailouts (SNB).  In the letters, MCAA/UA emphasize that SNB would give multiemployer pension plans the new tools they need to ensure the long-term viability of reliable retirement benefits for participants and their families and at the same time improve the sustainability of these plans in the markets for sponsoring employers. The letters also assert that adopting the suggestions in SNB would not require changes to plans or to benefits.  Rather, it would provide multiemployer defined benefit plans with additional tools to be used in strictly limited circumstances to meet the needs of individual plans.  The SNB incudes three categories of proposals: (1) those proposals that will preserve and strengthen the current system; (2) innovative proposals for alternative plan design structures; and (3) measures designed to help deeply troubled plans. MCAA President Michael R. Cables noted in announcing the joint MCAA/UA statement of support, "The system is in growing jeopardy, as is the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation safety net insurance program." He warned, "Our industry and employees and pensioners cannot tolerate further Congressional delay or inaction this year." MCAA members are strongly urged to contact their House and Senate representatives while they are back home in their districts and urge their support of SNB.  Please contact John McNerney (jmcnerney@mcaa.org) with questions or for assistance.

YOUR COMPANY'S 2013 SAFETY ACHIEVEMENTS MAY WIN AN AWARD
If you believe your company's 2013 safety performance may deserve an award, then you need to participate in MCAA's Annual Safety Awards Program. Co-sponsored by MCAA and CNA, the program requires the submission of statistical information and other safety program information contained in a five-part application. All participants will receive a confidential statistical benchmarking report. Five first-place safety awards will be presented at the Annual Awards of Excellence Breakfast at MCAA 2014 in Scottsdale, AZ. All participants who receive a zero lost workday cases incidence rate, or one that is 25 percent or more below the BLS industry average, will receive a Certificate of Commendation. Applications are now available online at www.mcaa.org/safetyawards, and completed applications must be received by MCAA no later than January 30, 2014. Please contact Pete Chaney (pchaney@mcaa.org) with questions.
