MCAA National Update for May 20, 2013

REQUESTS POUR IN FOR MCAA CHAPTER AND STUDENT INTERNSHIP GRANTS

The response to the availability of grants for student chapters and contractors who hire student interns was brisk this year.  MCAA has received 78 requests for Student Internship Grants, a record 15 requests for the Chapter of Excellence Grant and three requests for the Emerging Chapter Grant.  The Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF) provides funding for all the grants in support of its mission to advance the education of future industry professionals, and the MCAA Career Development Committee administers the program. Student Internship Grants ($1,200 each) are for contractors who employ college students majoring in construction management, mechanical engineering or other similar disciplines as interns. The internship provides the student with valuable work experience in estimating, project management, procurement and other business operations and the employer gains from the student's fresh perspective and technical skills. The grant goes to the contractor to help cover the intern's salary. Chapter of Excellence Grants ($7,500 each) go to chapters with well-established programs that include field trips to construction sites or established buildings with interesting mechanical systems, successful membership drives, fundraising events, participation in the annual Student Chapter Competition and successful placement of students in internships and full-time jobs. Part of the grant ($5,000) goes to student scholarships and the remainder is for chapter operations. The Emerging Chapter Grant ($3,000) goes to newly-established chapters or those that need help to become more established. The committee will meet to discuss the disposition of all grants in early June.  Contact Ann Mattheis (amattheis@mcaa.org) for more information.

registRATION IS STILL OPEN for next NFPA 70E Qualified-Level Arc Flash Safety Training webinar

there's still time for your service technicians or other employees who work with or around electrical equipment to register for the life-saving training available through the NFPA 70E Qualified-Level Arc Flash Safety Training webinar.  The next webinar will take place on May 21, at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. It is designed for MCAA/MSCA members' employees who are potentially exposed to live conductors of 50 volts of electricity or more during their workday and is ideal for mechanical service technicians working on units that push 480 volts or less. Presented by the Hilgeman Group, the session covers all OSHA and NFPA requirements, best practices and NFPA's recent changes to the 70E requirements and provides participants with real-world accident information that will reinforce the importance of this training. This training is available at a special rate for MCAA/MSCA members. Register by e-mailing ahilgeman@frontier.com.

YOUR SENIOR PROJECT MANAGERS CAN GET A LOT OUT OF AIPM

If your most experienced project managers have not taken a course lately to enhance their project management skills, the Advanced Institute for Project Management's (AIPM) 2014 class is perfect for them.  Class 10 takes place January 19-24, 2014 at the University of Texas in Austin, TX.  This program is designed to enhance the project management knowledge and skills of seasoned project managers.  Taught by our industry's top experts, the curriculum includes team building, keeping customers for life, legal issues, staying on top of schedules and productivity impacts, avoiding litigation, operational management, insurance and bonding, goal setting, and much more.  MCAA recommends that you send only graduates of the Institute for Project Management (IPM) with some project management experience or advanced project managers with considerable experience. For information about registration for Class 10, please contact Beth Miller (bmiller@mcaa.org).
