MCAA National Update for March 11, 2013

READY FOR A CHANGE FROM THE SNOW AND COLD?

MCAA 2013
Warm temperatures and sunny skies await you for MCAA 2013 at the JW Marriott Hill Country, San Antonio, TX. You can look forward to a week of excellent seminars and workshops featuring unconventional ideas that will help you grow your business, inspiring and informative general session speakers and fabulous social and recreational events. It'll be a relaxing, educational and memorable break from winter's worst. And, if you want to plan your week before you leave, go to www.mcaa.org for a link to the Final Program and to instructions for installing the new MCAA 2013 App. See you there!

DONATE TO MCAA PAC ONLINE

Contributing to MCAA-PAC is one way MCAA members can help the association move pro-industry legislation through Congress. And, it's easier than ever. Just go to www.mcaa.org and click on the MCAA-PAC button on the left side of the page. You will land on a page with a Prior Authorization form along with all the information you need about this process. Complete the form and then contribute...or not; it's up to you. Your contribution, paid by personal credit card, will go directly to MCAA-PAC, and you will be making possible meaningful changes in federal policy on a wide range of issues. Find out more about these issues and how they affect your business and you by attending the 2013 National Issues Conference (May 1-3, Washington, D.C.). Program and registration information is at www.mcaa.org/education.

WORK ACTIVITY METHOD ADDED TO WebLEM®

MCAA's Labor Estimating Committee is adding the Work Activity Method to the association's very popular WebLEM®. Contractors will now be able to assign labor hours by the work activity very accurately. Using this method, contractors are able to: break down the hours from their estimate into shop versus field; accurately estimate the number of hours required in situations involving many back-to-back fittings; and break down the components included in a work activity such as the pipe cut, weld, hydrotest, etc. Laboring by the Component Method (the current labor units in the WebLEM®) will continue to be available for use where a shop vs. field percentage multiplier is applied. If you would like to know more about how to use the Work Activity Method in your next project, stop by LEM Committee Co-Chairman Ron King's session--How to Apply the Work Activity Method of Labor Calculations, the Latest Update to MCAA's WebLEM®--during MCAA 2013 on Monday, March 18 at 10:30 a.m.

LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER FOR SERVICE SUPERVISOR TRAINING

Just a few spots remain for the Growing and Developing Service Supervisors program (April 18-20, in Philadelphia, PA). Service supervisors at all skill levels will leave this program with new insights and tactics they can use to manage virtually any workplace situation. Instructor Kevin Dougherty offers sage advice and facilitates role plays based on real-life situations that are videotaped for participants to evaluate their response to stressful and complicated customer relations scenarios. To register, go to www.mcaa.org/education/msca/superservice or contact Sobeida Orantes (saorantes@mcaa.org) for more information.

BIM CAN COME TO YOU
If learning about Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been high on your "To-Do" list for the year, you no longer have to wait for MCAA to offer an out-of-town course. MCAA's National Education Initiative (NEI) is making it possible for you to learn vital information about BIM at a nearby location. The NEI has introduced five new courses under its BIM for Mechanical Contractors series that will be available to local affiliates and individual contractors. Pete Mackenzie (recently retired from Mechanical Inc., Freeport, IL) will be the lead instructor for the new series along with David Morris of EMCOR9. The new courses are: Kick Starting BIM Because You Must, Getting the Most from BIM Project Execution Plans, Implementing and Managing the BIM Process Within Your Organization, It's All in the Details: Understanding, Staffing and Training BIM Detailers and BIM Risk Management and Avoidance. To schedule a course, contact Pete Mackenzie directly (pmackenzie@mcaa.org). Course descriptions and scheduling information can be found atwww.mcaa.org/nei/bim. For more information, please contact Dennis Langley (dlangley@mcaa.org).

SPEER MECHANICAL CONTRIBUTES TO MCERF

The Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF) recently received a contribution of $5,000 from Speer Mechanical (Columbus, OH), raising the company's total contribution to $131,500. The MCERF Board of Trustees is very grateful for the contribution, which will enable the Foundation to continue its education and research programs that help the industry advance. Find out more about MCERF's program by contacting Dennis Langley (dlangley@mcaa.org).
